Should I Buy

Hi I am currently an owner of a 2002 civic si with 98k miles and I am looking at trading my car for a tacoma. 2001 with 157k miles...super clean looking but the 157k miles makes me nervous. I know they last for ever and seem to hold their value pretty well. I will post pics this eve but for now does this trade seem worth it?!

Personally I'd pass on that because of the color/shady looking wannabe-prerunner look, but to each his own.

Mileage shouldn't be an issue, but are you sure you're ready to give up the gas mileage of the civic?

that taco looks like a pile, definitely be weary of the stock suspension with fiberglass fenders.

my 96 has 191,000 miles and still run's like new..... the suspension is worn out but the drive train is still great

 

I wouldn't do it, especially with the high miles!

Yea yea yea I know it's a Tacoma and they run forever yadi yah but that's just me..I wouldn't buy a vehicle with THAT many miles on it unless if it's specifically a trail rig and not a DD.

I bought my truck and drove it across the country with 158k on it, now I'm sitting at 186k and still running like a top.

As with every used vehicle, you need to remember that MAINTENANCE is the most important question to be asked. A truck can look great and have all the bells and whistles but if they don't know the last time the oil was changed it's time to walk away. Records are the 1 factor in determining a used vehicle's value in my eyes.

The non-factory appearance and just the way the ad looks means I would have gone over everything with a fine tooth comb before even thinking about a purchase.

Just because I have a 2nd gen right now doesn't mean I've never had a 1st gen. My first truck was a 2002 Tacoma Double Cab TRD Off-Road package Bought it in 05 with 22k miles on it.

It got totaled while I was deployed back in 08 so I got back to the states in January of 09 and bought my current 05 Taco with only 25k on it. Like I said that's just me...I wouldn't buy a vehicle with high miles on it.

You are correct..maintenance is very important but anyone can tell you they've done this and that to it. As long as he/she has documents proving so then it shouldn't be a factor i.e. receipts for when they bought oil for oil change if they're a DIY person.

And trust me..I know 1st gens are tough. I drove from Camp Pendleton, CA to Somerset, TX and from there back home to Beaverton, OR in the winter of 07 for my pre-deployment trip. Snowy conditions and all, especially in Utah.

 

That's definitely a good example of a truck to stay away from in my book. Chances are, the suspension is beat like crazy because whoever owned it probably drove it somewhat like a prerunner. However if you felt sorry for it, wanted to make it right again by fixing it up and could get it at a really good price, well...

 

I wouldn't touch that truck with a 10-foot pole.
