Grease Fittings

Does anyone have zerk (grease fittings) on their front driveshaft.
I am talking about the one that goes to the front differential.?

 

I believe I do. I know their a pain in the ass to get to!!!

 

Well if you have a 4x4, there are two zerk fittings on the front drive shaft. Also, only 4x4's have zerk fittings. The prerunners to dot have any.

Two...one for each u-joint. I had to turn the shaft by hand and the one at the t-case end was a bitch to reach w/out removing the rock shield under it.

 

got a 2010 4x4 double cab trd - all grease fittings on the drive shafts front to back appear to be sealed - as in "no greasing to be done" - ever.
Does this sound right?? Previously had an 05 and 08 and both could be greased but not this one, apparently - can I get an expert to comment on this ?

how can you tell that fittings are sealed? I mean if you see the fittings then hook up the grease gun and squirt some in

i can see the zerks on the 2010 as they were on my 05 and 08 but they are sealed over with some hard paint or plastic material - it is obvious that they will not take grease without some modification/material removal or other. service manager at local dealer says that this is normal and they are not to be greased - just fishing for another witness - after 53 yrs i've learned the the truth does not always come thru the first time you ask. actually i'll likely not be satisfied until and can find something documented from toyota.

sealed u joints dont have zerks...

post a picture. worst case scenario,all you would have to do is unscrew the "sealed zerk" and put normal ones in...

when my truck was new they looked all black with paint but as soon as you put a grease gun to it and pump once the little ball allowed grease in no problem. a lil paint wont stop the hundreds of PSI a grease gun can exert

 

The prerunners with the 4 cyl. have fittings.At least on the 2012s do.The V6s do not.

 

If your grease zerks still have factory paint on them, it means whoever changed your oil did not do their job correctly. The drive shafts (both of them) should have been lubricated, but weren't. Just wipe any dirt off of the zerks and put your grease gun to them.

In the future, point out to whoever changes your oil that greasing is part of the job and that trucks have grease zerks. Most cars today do not have any zerks.

 

they are just painted over, if you put a grease gun to them it will fill up the bushing...

i change my own oil - zerks are coated over unlike the other 2 tacs i had - just the facts ok - u may be right just push the gease in - BUT - be careful! - yes I have done research in the waining hrs....... If these babies are truelly sealed from factory - i may push non-compatable grease in there - will suspend further relpies until i have manf response - would not want to sound stupid for my hi-north buddy.

Just greased my 2012 V6 4x4 and there were 5 zerks in total. The front shaft had one on each end the front one was painted over and the rear I needed to remove the shield to get to it. Easy 2 bolts to remove. They all took a few pumps so it was needed.

 

just use LB grease youll be fine. Toyota wont likely have an answer for you because 90% of the techs are idiots...

U joints are mechanical, its not like brake fliud where dot 3 vs 4 can have adverse effects on seals or something. NGLI 1 or 2 will provide good protection on ujoints.

if they have zerks they are greasable. If they were sealed from the factory there would be no zerks...

Daughetc - if you just bought a used 2010, it's not uncommon for a dealer to do an undercoating to remove the look of surface rust. I recently went to look at a 2009 with a coworker at the dealer and everything underneath was coated black - coils, shocks, everything.

 

thx again - yes it was just paint undercoat - 5 zerks in all- believe or not i was able to get to the one with the sheild by using a small gun with small delivery spout - used NGLI II.

and one other note - it was not a minute too soon- after 30000mi - though I normally only drive in wussy conditions some joints spurted out a little moisture and air - not good - but all seems ok and they got the lube NOW.

 

I noticed when I got my truck the joints took a good 5 pumps. Pretty dry in my opinion. At 30k they only took 1 pump and 50k they only took 1 pump.

 

I just greased mine today, all but the rear one on the front drive shaft anyway. Just the other day I had the "free" 5000 mile service at the dealers, they didn't touch the zerks because they were still painted over. They all took at least 5 pumps...pretty dry.

Anyone try turning the rear zerk on the front drive shaft to make it more accessible?
