over dressing for a job test?

    I applied for a job at a major fd in nc and came to take the written test. I showed up an hour early and noticed everyone else is either wearing slacks a polo or a shirt and jeans...I'm wearing a shirt tie, dress pants and nice shoes. Is there such thing as bein too dressed?

    Yes. Usually depends on what position you're applying for. But it's always better to be overdressed than underdressed. Maybe those other folks were underdressed.:cool:

    When I interviewed for my current job I was in my PJ's. :eek: It was a phone interview so they didn't know the difference.

    I wore a suit to my interview (oral board), they were in their daily uniforms. They asked me


    "Don't think your over dressed?"

    Me: No Sir, Dress for success.

    One of interviewers: *chuckles* ok



    BTW I got the job ;)

    Remember for your interview with the oral board, practice any and all questions over and over, DO NOT say UMMM.


    I stumbled on my first question hard, I had practiced over and over what I was going to say, how I was going to say it and how I was going to give an example of it if I was asked to.

    I can't even remember the first question but my mind went blank I got out 2 words, and I said excuse me for just a second I have lost my train of thought. I took about 3-5 seconds which felt like FOREVER!!! Regained my composure and finished my interview.

    After I was hired, one of them told me I did good by not panicking and freaking out LOL

    I was taught that you "dress for the position you want, not the position you have". Whether we like it or not we are judged by our appearance.

    When being thought of for a position you are judged by far more then your appearance,

    Appearance, the way you talk, what you say HOW you say it, how you walk, your facial expressions, how you sit, how you react,

    and a lot more LOL

    Just got done there were hundreds of people! And only about 5 dressed up like me haha. I think I did well except for the memory and observation portion, I think I bombed the hell outta that, but we will know in a few weeks!

    No way man. Dressing up just shows you care about the opportunity. Even if you are "overdressed" it won't be seen as a negative, they'll just know you're taking it seriously.

    they didnt have a study guide and it was all easy except the part where you study a busy street corner for 2 mins then answer questions on it

    and thanks for all the imput guys, imma wear the same thing at all the rest of the job interviews/tests if i get invited to take them if not a suit


    this is my first time going through a hiring process and it at one of the largest fds in NC if i get on awesome if i dont i know i have more opportunities somewhere else or i can apply next year

    Kevin I'm sure you did fine.

    Though not currently, I've been involved hundreds of times over the years with the interview and selection process. Much of the time as a panel with several applicants, judging by the remarks and reactions of those on the panel with me, I'd have to say you can almost never be over dressed for an interview.

    I agree you can never be too dressed up for a job test/interview. If anything over dressing than your competitors will help you by sticking out to the people interviewing/testing you. They'll think oh yeah remember the guy in the tie when everyone else was wearing collard shirts, he must really be into this job if he wants to look this professional to just a test/interview...at least that's how I would think haha..

    i have a jackass friend that showed up to an interview wearing the dirty jumpsuit from the job he was currently at..IN THE WORKVAN!

    it was so obvious that he was using company time to interview. his interview lasted 5 minutes. he said he felt good about it because, "they liked him so much they had little to ask him"..what an idiot.

    sucked that his brother and i arranged the job interview for him.

    OP, sounds like you dressed properly. nothing wrong with dressing up to put your best foot forward. makes it look like this position is important to you. good luck.
