Pop&Lock 8520 and 8521 Guide

That looks like the top bundle on the drivers side but I do not believe that it will allow two clicks to open. When I opened up the passenger side the wires were right in front of me. Just to make sure I tapped into the wires and connected the lock. Two clicks of the remote confirmed I had the right wires. I want to make sure I had the electrical figured out before I spent an hour running wires.

 

It is the passenger side, but I have a double cab, so maybe that is the difference. Certainly not just jumping out at me. THanks.

On my 2012 Double Cab, I went on the passenger side. The photo in my is what I saw: lots of wires. I do not have too much to add to the info above but I would just suggest opening the front passenger door and tracing the wires back from there. There were two bundles of wires attached to the connector. The wires I needed were the lower wires labeled B in my photo. Both bundles of wires had a thick black tape-like coating, which I removed. My colors were the same as Mav44: blue/pink and blue/black. The bundle A wires were really small. The wires I used were also pretty small but larger than the smallest wires.

 

Where did you poke through from under the passenger side to get to the wiring?

 

There are a couple of little black rubber plugs about 4 or 5 inches from the edge of the car. I just slid under the truck, pulled the plug near the passenger seat, made a slit in it pulled the wires through and them put a glob silicone on the wires and over the slit. I ran the two wires only, not the black plastic covering, through the plug. I used the black covering before and after the plug cover. Just cut off the connectors and crimp the new ones on once you shortens the wires.

Edit: I should add that I have the backup camera and there were no open drain holes in the tailgate. I just drilled a hole in the bottom center of the tailgate. I also shortened the tailgate wires and crimped on new connectors from RadioShack.

 

Just finished my install in a 2012 double cab. I ran wires to the passenger side so as not to have the lock activate all the time. Between the instructions and all I have read on the posts, decided to call Pop N Lock tech support to confirm wire tie in colors...BLUE -RED STRIPE(kinda pink) and BLUE -BLACK STRIPE.

Works like a champ and don't have an extra key to carry! Only concern is how do I access bed through BakFlip if the solenoid fails?

 

I had the same thought. Hopefully if solenoid starts to go I can get it to open "one more time" to repalce or maybe get a coat hanger under the lip of the backflp and fish around till I hook the release cable.

 

what should I use to splice into the wires? My friend says to soldier them but that seems a bit much. What are the square things OP had in his how-to:

 

Your kit should have come with 2 wire taps. These are the blue things you reference in the photo. Basically how it works is you place the wire you want to tap into u-shaped metal section of the device. When you close the tap cover onto itself it will splice into the wire. It takes some pressure to close and snap shut. This insures the metal taps into the wire. Then on one end there is a recepticle to connect the Pop-n-lock wire fitting. Presto you are done. You do this to both wires. Test the connection before you close things up.

are these called vampire taps? my friend who mentioned to soldier them said they aren't the best? is he just being a perfectionist? he's like you should solider them and use a heat gun and that shrink tape... stuff I don't have

 

Soldering the wires in is light years better than using the scotchlocks. Your friend is right, but not everyone wants to/knows how to put that effort level into their work.

 

+1 for me. I just finished installing my Pop-and-Lock 5 minutes ago and works great. I did it on the passenger side, so only opens on two clicks. There are at least 3 sets of blue/pink and blue/black wires on the passenger side. Of course, my luck it was the third set before it was the right set. Word of advice, follow instructions on the thread and look at all the pictures. The bundle A/B pic was what helped me the most. It would saved me half of my Saturday last weekend and having to buy more taps if I would have looked at all the pictures posted, instead of assuming. If I would have picked the correct wires the first time, it would have taken me 20 minutes to complete.

PL8521 install on the passenger side and like rigoodma above me the bundle A/B pic helped me the most...made things a lot less confusing.

confirm on 2011 double cab v6 the blue/pink & blue/black are the correct wires, ignore the instructions!

PL8521 on my 2012 Tacoma quick and easy, with your help.

I'm having a problem. Wondering if anyone has ideas to help fix it...

The lock works fine 90% of the time. But, some mornings, if it's cold outside, and the truck has been idle all night, the lock WILL NOT RESPOND. After driving around and warming up the truck, the power lock suddenly works again.

I have a Bak Flip tonneau cover, so when the PL8521 fails, I'm completely locked out of my truck bed.

Any ideas why the lock fails to work on cold mornings? I've tried just about EVERYTHING and about to give up on this, and just go with a basic key lock instead.

 

I used some WD40 on mine cause it didn't sound very smooth when actuating...maybe it's just a lil stiff in the cold AM? No idea why the cold would affect electrical but I'm not an expert by any means! GL

Thanks for the writeup. I didn't have to undo the plastic clips in step 2, it is possible to bolt the lock without messing with them.

 

Your picture in step 8 shows four red wire taps. I have similar wire taps that I disconnected while installing my pop n lock PL 8521 on my 2012 Tacoma. I don't have a wiring diagram to tell me how to reconnect them. I need the wire color connection combinations for the tapped and tapping wires.

Currently, I've noted that at least my passenger side power window and key warning chime do not work because the taps aren't correctly connected.

Just installed on 2012 DC SR5. All the info was great. Ran wires to passenger side and tapped into blue/pink and blue/black. Mine has the back up camera so I had to drill a 3/8 hole in the bottom of the tailgate to run wires through. Then through the spare tire hole.

 

just a heads up for my 2012 double cab sr5/w back up camera, i followed the bundle of wires out from my passenger door and used the lower bundle b at first but didn't work for me. second try i followed tw member JTyfz450 post/ photos and used the bundle from the "y" split worked like a charm.
