Looking to change front differential, manual transmission, and rear differential oil. Getting great feedback in another of my threads, but I need some quick responses to this job specifically since I want to do this ASAP.
Can I use this type for all three components?

Mobil 1 Synthetic Gear Lube LS 75W-90

Thanks for the info and advice!
    Cheers,

    Awesome, thanks!
What about the transfer case? I forgot about that one. Can I use the same oil for that, too??

Im pretty sure its the same for the transfer case, take a quick look in your owner's manual, has every fluid you will need listed.

    Thanks guys....much appreciated.
Not to sound too much like an idiot, but I didn't know that there was difference between the transmission and transfer case.

So, I do have four (4) components that I need to replace gear oil in then, right?
The transfer case in on the rear of the transmission, right??

This will be the first time any of these have had the gear oil changed, and I have had the truck since new in 2002......now it has 218K on it!!

    Should I expect some sludge???
Any advice to flush out each component????

    Thanks again!!

    Ahhhh....ok, got it. Thanks. :D

So, to do a gear oil change on all four components I am looking at about 12 quarts (1 case) of gear oil, then, right?

Yes. You should change the oil in your Transmission, Transfer Case, Rear Differential, and Front Differential. I don't think any kind of flush is required, but they'll drain best if they're warm (i.e., recently run). I found some sludge on my drain plugs, which I simply cleaned off.

Another important note is to open the FILL plug on each component BEFORE you remove the drain plug. That way, you KNOW you'll be able to re-fill what you drain. Doing it the other way around can be an expensive lesson, since you COULD end up having to tow it to a garage if you can't re-fill the oil you drain...

You should get the correct replacement crush washers for the job. You'll need eight of them, and they're NOT all the same. Total cost for the washers should be $12-$15.

I also recommend some kind of pump with which to put the new oil in, since it's impossible to "pour" it in.

right. more than likely have a qt left over maybe more. also get a pump of some sort for the front differential. it is kinda tough to get to the fill plug. open fill plugs first. the reason is if you open the fill plug but can not open the drain plug you still have oil. if you open the drain plug first you drain the oil and if you can not open the fill plug you have a bigger problem. also the plugs are 24 mm

Quantities are all specified in the manuals to which I referred above. Recommend you download and review before attempting the job. FWIW, however, I THINK I only used about 8qts when I did mine.

Great info and advice! I really appreciate all the help. I am going to start tackling these today starting with my oil change then moving on to the gear boxes, but I will definitely have a look at the manual first!
    Thanks again,

    Holy crap, what a day!!
I started off trying to locate enough gear oil to change it out in all four of my gear boxes.....no luck. Local mom/pop shop closed, AutoZone only had three quarts, and Pep Boys only had one. So, four quarts is all I had to work with for today.
Since I have never done this before, I started out with a warm truck and did my oil change with Mobil 1 5w30 (and Mobil 1 oil filter) as I have done for the past 150K+ miles. All fine, but I took it one step further and actually replaced the drain plug with a new one along with the new washer. Fit perfect!!
Then ran the truck a bit to get the new oil flowing through...all fine.
Now on to the gear boxes.
Attempted to locate each of the gear boxe's drain/fill plugs. Front differential, rear differential, and transfer case were no problem, but I cannot find the plugs to the damn transmission ---- HELP on this please!!!
Having only 4 quarts to work with I decided to do the two easy ones for me -- the rear differential and transfer case.
I did the transfer case first. Was shocked that only just over a quart drained (yes I unscrewed the fill plug first -- thanks for the advice on that!). Was more shocked that it looked to be cleaner than my engine oil and it's NEVER been changed. No large metal parts or shavings and no sludge. Smelled a bit, but not overly awful. Was even more shocked that it only took a little more than a quart to fill it back up. All fine here.
Now moving on to the rear differential. A totally different story. I need new plugs and washers. Mine are badly corroded and in need of replacement soon. Got them off, barley, fill plug first of course. Then it drained........the crap that came out of my rear differential was nothing short of God awful. This crap smelled like onions mixed with bay mud and had the consistency something between soft ice cream and booger snot. I am not kidding, it was truly horrible. It puttered a few times while draining and chunks of sludge came out. It took almost 15 minutes to drain completely, and the truck had been run for a while prior to doing the changes. The goo was warm to the touch and it still was slow to drain. Also, when I unscrewed the fill plug at the start of this adventure a hiss came out of the rear differential's fill hole, as if it had built up some pressure in there....is that possible? Is that bad??
    Ok, I digress......
Anyway, after it drained all the way I squirted some fresh gear oil in there and let it drain out again (hoping I would have enough to finish the job). That was a good thing, because a couple more sludge chunks fell out as the new oil passed through the gear box.
A close inspection of my drain plug revealed no large metal chunks or pieces of anything hard. The sludge appeared to have the color of graphite, though. Cleaned off the plugs and washers and filled it up.
All in all I had about a quarter of a quart of Mobil 1 75w90 LS gear oil left after this whole experience. Not bad.

Any thoughts on all this? Did I do alright for my first time?? Anything I could have done better or missed???

Thanks for any and all advice!!

sounds good. also i believe the drain plugs for the transmission are on the side. could be wrong either on the side or on the back. one up high one down low.
