265/75/R16 and Toyota

If I understand things correctly, one of the conclusions one can draw from the numerous tire size for stock suspension Tacoma's sporting 16 inch rims is, 265/75/R16's fit just fine without rubbing.

That being the case, why doesn't Toyota show the 265/75/R16 as an alternative/optional tire? Or am I missing something real obvious here?

Maybe they don't want to give the option. Why change a good thing.

 

Maybe on stock wheels, from my readings I've found that with aftermarkets they won't. I've been asking this question and haven't really gotten an answer. I'm about to put 16x8's on my truck and have been told by members with the same wheels that they will scrub and will need to trim. So I'm planning to stay with the stock size. Wish I knew for sure before I buy my tires. I know the offset and backspacing will change things. I'm putting on 16x8 Moto Metal w 0 offset and 4.5 bs.

 

I have 265/75R16 MT's and had mine on after market moto metal's and had to take the front mud flaps off but after I did that I had 0 rub. I have the TRD Beadlocks now and still no rub.

 

I'd imagine they don't show it because it is bigger than the original tires, and gives you worse gas mileage.

 

U can fit 265/75/16 w/ that setup.

 

you know those numbers on the sticker, the MPG....they want those to go higher not lower!

larger tires= more rotational mass= more work needed by the motor= worse fuel economy

 

With no lift or leveling kit?

 

Yup....you're good to go. Just take the front flaps off and you shouldn't have any problems.

 

I know it would look better but I really like the protection of the flaps though.

Sure but it also equals a lower effective gear ratio. At cruising speed this can result in a fuel economy increase, as long as the tire is not a heavy LT. Going from P245/75R16 to P265/75R16 has not noticeably affected my MPGs.

 

toyota is looking for a balance of power and economy, apparently they came up with the "ideal" set-up. I am under geared right now, which is what the larger tires and factory gearing would be like for the OP. At cruising speeds yes I am at low RPM but it feels as if the motor is working harder and certain points to keep me going at a certain speed.

For instance, I was over geared with 4.56 and 255/85/16. Now I am undergeared with 4.56 and 315/75/16. I get the same fuel economy as I got with the previous set-up at the expense of my power which has noticable decreased.

Those values are for a 4 cylinder just to throw that out for correct info.

Also to add: in theory YES you should get better fuel economy but with a lot of other vairables such as weight with rotational mass I do not think the real follows the ideal in this sort of situation.

 

Yeah I was also planning to stay with the 265 70 16 to try to not hurt mpgs. I've read on here to expect to lose 1-2 mpg if I go to the 75's. Since I'm not lifting then I figure why kill the mpg?

I'm about to put these on my stock 2012 prerunner DC. I'll let ya know. They're $82 each so I can't pass them up.

 

Freakin Walmart refused to put them on my truck and I was pressed for time so I went with Wranglers in the factory size. Oh well.

 

They told me that as well, they told me it was a liability issue if they don't put on a factory size tire.

I wanted to put 265-70R17s on my 4Runner with a 2/1" leveling lift. (factory is 265/65/17)

I got my tires from BJ's, but they gave me an issue as well. But we ended up ordering them as "FJ Cruiser" replacements" in their computer system.

 

I have 2003 4wd tacoma extra cab with stock suspension. I just put on some new bfgoodrich T/A K02's, 265/75/16 from discount tire and they rub a little bit on the front mud flaps and plastic fender liner when making a sharp turn. Deciding whether to take them back or not worry about it.

 

Same deal with the KO2's, they rub when making a sharp left turn.
