Cleaning my throttle body and this is what I found...

I took apart my intake to clean the MAF and throttle body today. After removing the throttle body I took a look inside the intake manifold and was amazed at all the gunk inside.

It is a thick black tar like substance all over the inside of the manifold. I used some throttle body cleaner to clean the gunk off of the throttle body and clean the opening of the intake manifold.

Here are the pictures. The gunk is black, the camera flash makes it look brown.








Anyone else notice this? My 4.0L V6 has about 72,000 miles.

I am considered removing the intake manifold and attempting to clean all of the gunk out of the inside.

 

I'd like to know what filter you run!?

 

Been using a AFE Pro dry for the last 20k miles. Cleaning it when I change oil and after off-roading.

Before that I used a stock drop in filter.

Maybe a combination of pcv valve residue and dust from off-roading?

when cleaning the plastic manifold is it safe to just take some gum gone (names wrong i think but cant remember the name) and just spray it through the runners and let it dry?

Looks like someone is a light footed driver. Like to run a little higher octane too? Spray some upper manifold cleaner down the intake and let it set. When you start it up, foot to the floor! For about 30 seconds.

 

This is caused by driving lightly? And running higher Octane? Please explain. I do both, I guess I should take a peak in there to see what it looks like as well.

 

never spray alot of gum cutter inside the intake because all that crap will go right through your cats no good. also having some oil residue inside your intake is normal. but your looks like alot of dirt is getting inside id consider a different filter

 

How does octane in the gas relate to build-up in the intake? Fuel is added to the mix behind the intake valve, not anywhere near the throttle body. Not that I don't believe you, it just doesn't make sense.

 

It looks like what you would find when you run an over oiled K&N but he's using a dry filter. Time to check the PCV valve and maybe run a catch can to cutdown on the residual build up.

That's not too bad for the mileage. Clean it out, hook back up, and you should be fine. Chris2x4 probably has some good advice on this. Wherever he may roam.

This. Filters are not 100%, some shit gets in. After 76k miles, that's pretty normal for the throttle body.

 

Oh ok, i guess that makes more sense with AlaskanTaco was saying. If you drive lightly with higher octane than you arn't burning as much gas so more carbon builds Still not doing the pedal to the metal for 30 secs after starting.

 

Filters that aren't the OEM paper material are especially prone to less filtering
