Locker Questions

I am asking because of a conversation at work. Badass Ford F150 guys were bashing my "jap crap". How original.... -____-

How strong is the rear locker in our trucks? If I were to do the locker mod, lock it, and slide it around on street, would it hold up?

No im not going to test it and find out, Im just genuinely curious.

And generally, a ring gear is pretty difficult to break, so if i am comprehending this correctly, the locker is very strong?

And no showing off for me anyways. Maybe If i could afford to replace my rear... whatever else would go wrong haha

Yeah, that makes sense. The stock tires would slip under pressure easier than aftermarket. I also didnt fully understand how the locked worked. I did my research and now realize thats its a strong design

 

I don't think I've heard of anyone breaking a locker. I think a few had issues with pinions, the rest are all broken ring gears.

So basically almost every 8" rear end that's broke has been ring gears.

In other words, the locker is plenty strong.

 

Yea i got cromo gears on order If i have the time im also going to drive them up the road and get them cryo treated.

 

3 4WD Tacomas with a Toyota locker, together totalling over 260,000 miles, never a rear (or any driveline) problem.

 

12 year old truck, 0 locker problems (knock on wood)

 

i drive with my rear locked on pavement all the time since its an auto locker... it will break the tires loose and i havent had a failure yet

 

58k on the ticker and four sets of broken rear ring and pinion gears..last set was the pinion gear that broke about a month ago, and many other various broken parts to include a cracked frame and a transmission cross member with several major cracks. although i cant complain just because i go where no IFS taco should go in the first place, it's still a bummer when one go's. i'm hard on my junk plus i tow with it on occasion


but never an issue with the rear locker itself. that thing is nearly indestructible, as long as you engage it under 5mph!..i have a 3rd torn a part so i'll take some pics of the actual locker sometime tonight..

if that big ass motor home with a dana70 duelly rear end can make it then so should my neighbors stock AWD RAV4 but thanks none the less

 

Only if the RAV4 has 9"+ min. ground clearance, and low range... and a rear locker. I was just joking with you, you know. LOL

 

minus 6" on the dana70 pumpkin just because of it's huge size..why no Rock Crawler runs a dana70 because you"re loosing ground clearance with that ginormous thing..even with a shave kit..just saying cuz if he can get through then..... anyone can
