The bumpstop is what should ultimately stop the travel of the tire on a hard right? So you could take it up to the bump without the shock and trim away.

It probably will not work. I originally tried and it just started jacking up the whole truck and got unsafe. Pulling the shock and taking it up to the bumpstop is probably the best way to do it.

The rear bumpstop yes, maybe my brain is taking a weekend, but didn't realize there were bumpstops for the front.

Also with jacking, you are only picking up the weight of the corner unless you keep jacking until you pickup the whole front end, in a drop scenario or offcamber unlevel condition you could have more weight on that corner.

you are correct brian there are no bumpstops in a front suspension, also your susp should not be soo stiff that the weight of even just one corner shouldnt compress the shock. i am not saying it will completely compress the shock and spring like a drop would but it would at least give you a better idea of what it would do under light offroading. also i dont see how jacking up one corner with all the tires on would present an unsafe situation. worst that happens is the jack moves out from under the lca and the truck lands on the tire that was in the air. no less safe than taking out the susp then trying it, possibly safer for the truck in fact. at any rate all you have to do is measure the diameter of the tire and then measure the diameter of the fender well and you will see that a 285 will not fit tucked completely into the fender without doing body damage and in essence that is exactly what a good drop would do to the tire and susp.

hmmm forgot about those being up there. but i guess i wasnt the only one that forgot them so no biggie. guess i just never really paid them any attention before, but at any rate if you can get your lca to sit on those then its not gonna compress much farther than that anyway.

You defenintly have front bumpstops. One on each side of the lca. It is unsafe, I was nervous attempting to get my head up under there trying to see where the tire hits. I was afraid the jack was going to shoot out and the truck would drop violently, I dont want my head under that. Maybe Im just a wussy, but it makes sense to me. Its much easier to jack the truck up, shock still on, and then put a jackstand under the frame. Then take off the shock and use a jack to compress the suspension all the way to the bump and see where it rubs. Now, the whole tire will stuff into the fender well and you are only jacking up the weight of the tire instead of the whole truck. This is much easier, more accurate, much safer, and only takes a little more time. Sounds good to me....

Agreed with pulling the shock. I just can't believe that I need to carry the truck to the bumpstop for clearancing since it has the lift. Maybe I will measure out the coil diameter and figure out when the coils would be completely compressed and use that as a measurement of available travel.

I think you are trying to be too professional about this. Go drive around, turn far left and right in forward and reverse, then try to pull up a curb at full lock in both directions. You'll see rub marks and bam, thats what you need to trim. Thats what I did and I had it trimmed for what I needed in 10 minutes.

^^^ sounds like a plan to me. it will also let you know whether or not trimming will work or if they just aint gonna fit.

not to mention, I wouldn't even consider running 285's w/ anything less than 3". If I could redo the tire situation on my next truck, I'd probably keep stockers on it all the time until I go offroading, then I'd get some 33x12.5's.

The amount of work to fit 285's PROPERLY vs. 12.5's isn't much different. That is, assuming 285's will hit your body mounts. I know every one says different, but since mine hit the body mounts, I will want to do the cab mount chop next time around.

how are 285's an advatage over 265's offroad? other than the almost 1/2" in added clearance they give and a bit wider track? dont they also rob a little power and take away flex ability compared to a 265? i would think bigger tire harder to turn over in thick mud or stuck on a rock?? this is not a statement it is a genuine question that i would like someone to offer a possibly well supported arguement for one or the other. you know like dem smart folks do all da time....

thats what old people do. its our job we have had our days of just lower your head and hit it hard, now we know we wont be able to walk the next day if we try it that way anymore. so we try to "do the numbers" first to see what might go down before we attempt it.

I actually have a jeep now. Imagine that.
No matter how you look at it, a wider tire provides more contact patch, which in turn provides more grip. As far as robbing power, thats a hard one to address. You are going to see the power robbed in more ways than just OD and width of tire. For example, the weight of the tire plays a huge roll in lost power. My trail grapplers are heavy as hell for a 285. Other things to consider too is how the tire is making contact to the ground. Sloshing through mud, a mud tire is going to grab differently than it would climbing a pointed rock surface. It all depends on how you are distributing your force. Both circumstances provide a different static friction to overcome, and thus differing power requirements.

The thing with these v6's is, with the realistic offroading we are going to put out DD trucks through, they provide more than enough power for either 265's or 285's. It's when you start hitting huge tires like kurts and kyles (must be a k thing) that you will see decreased power, especially in climbing situations. Their tires are approx 15-18% larger in diameter than the stock tires and about 20% wider. 20% is a large value to overcome compared to approx 8-10% you will across 265-285's

If I had to chose just one tire for DD and offroading this time around, i'd definitely got 265's.
