Driving auto like manual

I am going to first say that I wasn't sure where to post this so I chose here in the performance section. That being said, I want to know if it is possible to drive my automatic transmission like a manual. Such as starting out in 1, then moving into 2 and so on until reaching D. Is this bad for your transmission?

 

no, there is absolutely no point at all and it is completely redundant. the gears on the auto are for engine braking, they won't actually shift the transmission up and down like driving a manual, all they do is limit it.

 

i guess its possible but why would you want to?

 

oh no! you must not realize, shifting gears (EVEN IN AN AUTOMATIC) makes you look super cool, like a race car driver, and it impresses the bitches so much they instantly jump on you and give you road head!

Yes you can. It's absolutely fine and not going to Hurt a thing. Unless you absolutely abuse the heck out of it. But it is a little unnecessary lol unless your using it as engine braking as stated in the above post. That's why it's an auto

 

well, i will say that i do it sometimes on very hilly stretches of road because i find it utterly annoying that the auto shifts up while going up a hill, just for it so shift right back down a second later. irks me. not to mention if im screwing around and want to wind it out a weency bit before shifting, unlike the auto. maybe im dumb. maybe deep down i want a standard, but i know it'd get old shifting ALL the time.

 

Why not just get a stick....

 

^ According to Car and Driver testing, the 5-spd auto is half a sec. faster than the 6-spd manual to 60 mph and in the 1/4 mile, possibly due to the auto's better-spaced ratios, so you have one fewer shift on the dragstrip.

OP: If you floor the gas pedal, the ECU will automatically select higher-rpm shift points anyway, so doing it yourself won't be faster.

I sometimes row through D-4-3 for engine braking, that's about it.

 

edit: im a derp and dont know 2nd gen trannys

 

cant on 2nd gens.

technically our "D" is overdrive. so in our case dropping the tranny down is "turning it off"

 

All I wanted to know was if its possible. It's not like I'd be doing this all the time in place of the auto. Then that would be dumb. Very dumb.

This isn't Fast and Furious no It's not gonna make a difference. You'd just come off looking like a ricer. I knew a guy that drove his automatic Eclipse like that and he just looked like a douche canoe more than anything.

 

would i be just as cool if i did it in my last taco with a steering column shifter?

 

Listen all OP wanted to know is if this harms his tranny or truck in anyway shifting up or down shifting. So Instead of making fun of the question someone should answer him because I would like to know as well
