Relocated Snorkle

Has anyone tried something like this? I'm not wild about cutting a 3" hole in my fender and I'd like to avoid it if possible.

Here's my idea. If you've seen remote turbo systems that are available for some cars you've seen the long charge pipe that runs under the vehicle. I'm thinking you could do a similar thing and have it exit somewhere up under the rear fender or diesel smoke stack style up behind the cab.

It seems like it would be fairly simple with regards to the piping required. The upper fender that forms the truck bed is concealed but has an upper limit with regards to the max depth the water can be. Truth be told, if you're in water up that deep you're likely in trouble anyway but overkill is in my nature.

Has anyone tried something like this?

I plan to run a snorkel but I have an idea for a better way to do it that DOESN'T require you to cut a hole in such an obvious spot and have an ugly pipe sticking out of the side of the truck.

 

And I just realized I spelled 'Snorkel' wrong in the thread title...fail

 

id imagine the longer intake and more bends would inhibit airflow.

Just get yourself a cheap aftermarket fender, or upgrade to glass fenders if your afraid of cutting up your stockers.



in all honesty though i would watch what holes i drove into and check the depths (yeah, i saw and remember your other thread )

 

also running it under the cab you would really have to make sure it is sealed well because you are lowering it into the water area. plus increased probability of hitting it with a rock and losing your seal. sounds like a dangerous idea to put it there. sounds inevitable to go thru the fender. maybe time for some fiberglass!

In all seriousness though, I really like the concept. The issue I see is a long length of pipe but some of that can be overcome by oversizing the piping. I would think that functionally you'd be better off putting it up like a smoke stack rather than in the fender (although with that scenerio, you're cutting the bed so which is less expensive to replace, the bed or a fender). Above the tire in the rear fender isn't all that much higher than where it's located now but just in the rear of the truck (although if you do happen to nose dive in a big ass puddle you'd be safe )

Now let's say you used some of the IQ points you have and considered for a moment that you could indeed have both. Don't you think it would be worth pursuing? In my opinion, it would.

I'm thinking you could get away with about two more bends than the typical snorkle install. The only difference other than that would be the length of the pipe used. Connections made using the same style silicone couplers that you would use on a turbo/supercharger install so you know it's water tight.

If mine was a dedicated rig I wouldn't care how it looked but it's not and I'd rather not look like a tool driving down the road every day. Plus, I'd imagine that the regular snorkel location is shit in terms of wind noise.

Yes, this is why the smoke stack style is my first choice thus far.

I'm not trying to be an ass but I'm just trying to make sure we understand each other. I know it's not typical and that's why I'm asking the question. I've fully considered a normal snorkel install and deemed it not appropriate.

 

This would be ideal but might be a PITA to do...

What about the hood scoop? I'm sure there's got to be some way where you can make it actually function "as a snorkel"....but its not much higher than the stock air intake position
