Relocated Snorkle

If you do that, I definitely want to see a write-up! I've been wanting to do something like that for a while (might just go with a snorkel) but I'd love to see one of those on a Tacoma!

 

Going outside to measure some stuff. I'll let you guys know what I discover.

 

Air intake through the firewall into the cab then a filter head.

My take on that: Cutting into the firewall and inserting flammable plastic through it then having your engine noise in the cab with you is a bad idea and if you ever did need the firewall for protection your screwed.


Air intake outside the truck with a filter on the end.

My take: The filter will get wet and thats no good. The tubing is now exposed to the exterior of the truck and is very low. Should anything hit the PVC and crack it you will suck water.

There is no wind noise.
I personally like the look of the snorkle, I think you look like a tool bag with stacks in the bed of a tacoma.
Really the hole isnt that hard to cut. If you use those IQ points you talk of you should have no problem drilling it or cutting it out with a dremal.
The biggest problem is the engine compartment has plenty of electrical items that take a shit when the get subed, but most can be replaced easy. The engine is safe and you get about 1 to 2 mpg better with it. AActs as RAM air.

 

thats funny, i thought about this before i bought my safari. i had invisioned going through the fire wall and through the back of the cab, but that would require cutting 2 walls, not to mention the piping would be impossible to hide. also thought about running the piping just in front of the firewall and then down along the frame rail, cutting a hole through the bed, then through the bottom of my tool box and adding a filter on the end but that just seemed like too much work. i like the idea because i have had a few hours of the same thought proccess but honestly safari (arb) has it going on!

 

I have to agree with the OP, I wouldn't want a snorkel on my truck being my DD. But I like this idea, it would look clean.

 

If you really need a snorkel what is going to stop water from coming over your hood?

You would be better leaving it in the stock location.

 

A true snorkel needs to be the highest part of the truck IMO. Anything on the hood is just bad engineering and pretty stupid.

Lets make this real easy.

Truck approaches puddle/river

Truck drives into river

Water comes over hood due to momentum

Water flows into hood mounted snorkel and hydrolocks engine.

Now that's thinking out of the box....or at least your new crate engine is gonna be out of the box soon


I think my truck looks way better then a stock truck anyday and it always draws more of a crowd

 

That type of snorkel seems very common on a Jeep or a Hummer (a real Hummer, not the H2 or H3). I'd like to see one on a Tacoma, the problem I see is it'd have to go through the hood and be removed to open the hood.

 

They make STS kits for the 2nd Gens? I've seen one on a 1st Gen, never a newer Taco though.

 

I could be running the same exact head on my snorkel. I know a few guys who do run them, but they get no added fuel economy like the ram air styles. They do filter better though.

 

Ya I was thinking how it would work. Maybe a pipe that ends at the hood and has some type of a weather strip tight to hood to seal it to where it goes through the hood. If you know what I mean. Now it might not be the best "water tight" solution, but I think it would work ok.

Edit: or since that does not stick up far, could have have the pipe almost fit inside of that when you close the hood too.

 

I think that'd be the way to go, mount a larger diameter tube and head to the hood itself, then run a smaller diameter tube from inside the engine bay up to sit in the middle of it. If done correctly, hood would still open and no water would get into the intake. Flex pipe at the connection might work also although I'd rather not have that in my air intake.

 

So because cutting a fender hole is crazy and a typical snorkel so ugly we are leaning towards cutting a hole in the hood for one of these

I understand the want to make things better and think outside the box, but sometimes the field tested, nation approved, original is best.

 

LOL, a hole is going to be cut somewhere, we are looking for the best option for the OP.

Personally, I'd rather have a solid colored one vs. that tupperware looking thing though.

 

The best option is what many governments use....a Safari snorkel.

Now if you don't like it a version from another vendor will be available in the US very shortly that is made specifically for a Tacoma. This is the first one installed for testing.
