I would look at the Springfield XDm 45 3.8. It's brand new, just came out in november. It comes with a 9 round mag for a compact size, and a 13 round mag for a fullsize grip. It comes with 3 different backstrap sizes to fit your hand. This way your wife could use the small mag for her smaller hand and you could use the fullsize mag for your larger hand.

This gun comes in 9mm and 40 as well so whatever caiber you decide on would be available. I like .45, but 9mm is definitely cheaper to shoot. When we switched from 40 to 45, the recoil went down actually due to the .45 being a slower round.

It comes in stainless or black....stainless is a little more pricey .It's worth checking out!

edit: that guy on that link wants WAY too much for it. I paid 599 for mine.

    I agree with Lgs79 . I have s S&W1911 .45 ACP, I love the gun , but my wife can't shoot it . To noise , to much kick and the ammo expensive . I wanna buy as a second gun a 9mm Beretta(Probally The 92A1 not the PX4) .

I would have an XD if we were allowed to carry them. I had an xd40 when they were first called xd and not hs2000 (and cost several hundred less without the Springfield mark). The 40's had a problem with the bullet coming up from the left side of the mag hitting the slide stop lever. It never caused a problem in mine, but I ground down the slide stop lever so it wasn't contacting the bullet anymore. Have they fixed this in the new ones? I really like the XDM's. I don't think they are a replacement for glocks though. Many American shooters find them more comfortable and easy to be accurate with. I was more accurate with my xd40 then my g23, at first anyway. I like 'em, but they are not a "go to war" gun, as far as I'm concerned. This is the qualification I use when considering guns, cars, etc. Is it PROVEN to withstand heavy use and abuse with minimal or no maintenance for long periods of time and still fulfill it's primary role? I know it's the standard sidearm of the Croatian military, but torture testing has not been documented like it has been with Glock.

My issued gun is a PX4 DAO in .40. They are dangerous and poorly made. Very nice shooters, neat rotating barrel action, but that little cam system is asking to be plugged up with dirt. My entire agency has had all of our guns sent back to beretta twice, and for the same problem: the mags not dropping free. At first they opened up the mag wells and that didn't help. Then they gave us new mags and I had two of them that still weren't dropping free. The feed ramp is also plastic (all chewed up) with a metal insert and the plastic part of my rear rails was shearing off: not confidence inspiring. It's a comfortable and accurate (once you get used to a 12 pound DAO trigger) gun though. When the SHTF it will be thrown through the window of a gun store in order to get decent weapons.

I like your point of view. All things I have thought of too. I've been around firearms all of my life. Fired thousands of rounds, everything from .22s, shotguns, HP rifles, hand guns. When you have that weapon in your hands you have to be in control and know what you are doing. Yes, when someone is definately threating your life or your family and it's do or die, you gotta do what you gotta do, but you better know how to use that weapon and realize what the consequenses will be. I have a permit and I carry, but I realize it's a last resort decision.

I think you'll find that the XD's have had most of the same shit done to them that Glocks have. I love me a Glock, they've never done me wrong. My G27 was one of my fav guns. Carried it almost everywhere. This new XDM 45 3.8 compact i love even more. It shoots smooth. I think the trigger reset on the Glock is superior though or maybe I am just more used to it. Either way, for $599 for a that gun to have 10 rounds of 45 concealable, I don't think you can go wrong with it.

Your needs and mine are/were identical...I chose the Glock 23 (compact .40 cal)

Fits my hand like a glove, I mean it literally feels like the grip was molded for my hand...I suppose you can only be as efficient with a firearm as you are comfortable and confident with it and that's why I chose the G23...

Small enough to comfortably carry and packs a hell of a punch...plus its a Glock!!!!

I opted to go with a 3rd Gen. Got it brand new with 3 clips for $450 OTD.

    Good luck bud :D

Foglights are for fog, not oncoming traffic!
    No, don't.
The recoil from a 40SW is sharper than either 45acp or 9mm.
It's a higher-pressure round and it's the worst of the three for starting out.
    10mm is worse, still.
You both need to get some training and then, consider handguns that have some positive safety features.
    Glock isn't one of them.
The Springfield HD has a grip safety that will provide an extra level of safety.
FNP autoloaders have a decocker that might be a good idea too.

there is nothing wrong with a Glock...just use your main safety(brain) and keep your booger hook off the bang switch unless you plan on destroying something...

I like that booger hook, My next gun is going to be a Glock 26. And as far as the decocking lever the sigs also have and are a outstanding handgun. Thats what I shot for years in the Navy, (I was part of the river navy spec war) I still love my sigs. I have just not found one for daily carry. But as TW has said everyones needs are different. Shoot a lot of different gun and find the one that fits youand your wife. You can alway do as i did and buy her own that way there is no compromise for either of you.:D

You'd never can go wrong with a Glock. If you decide to get a Glock go with a Gen 4 19, IMO..

There is something to be said for a .38 pocket revolver. They only have 5 shots like the ruger LCR but all you have to do is pull the trigger, no slide to rack or safety to worry about.

I like the Glock 19 but with me I am a chubby guy and that little bit of a difference lets the gun start imprint thru my t-shirt. So have tried the and found the 26 to work best. (for at least until i loose 20 lbs) Im kinda out school I cant wear baggy jeans and be comfortable. It's always been wranglers and boots. Here I was looking at the glock 26 and my loving wife is picking out a new sig she wants. I guess only fair I get a new one she gets a new one.:D

I love my Beretta 92FS something fierce and keep 2 clips loaded with hollow-points for home defense and 2 with FMJ for fun at the range. My girlfriend isn't a huge fan of it though..that's why she has a 12 gauge on her side of the bed. :D
