Good point... a clear covered air box is good for something! I'd want it solid colored just as a deterent. That clear plastic looks wierd and neat and something people might mess with if seen in a parking lot. If it's plain and boring looking, people tend to leave it alone. There are some stupid people out there

 

I think that piece is quite ugly as well. And it's not that I CAN'T cut the hole it's that I'd prefer not to due to resale one day far far in the future. My fab skills are quite good.

Someone mentioned flex pipe which was part of my original idea. Why not use a flexible tube of the same diameter? This would eliminate the need for elbow's or curved pieces and you wont have to worry about it cracking. As long as the tube has a decent temperature rating I think this would be ideal.

 

Flex tube can crack at the ribs and you might not notice it until water gets in. Plus it disturbs air movement, smooth surfaces promote air flow better than something corrugated.

You can get different snorkel caps if you like the idea of plopping one on the hood itself, some more low profile than others.

If I were to pipe my intake tube from the engine to the rear of the truck, I'd use exhaust tubing. Something that can dent and not break, durable, no seams (or as few as possible and keep the seams as high as possible).

 

Flex tube can be used no problem. You will not gain as much fuel efficiency using corrugated tubing vs slick tube though.

 

You could always use pvc pipe. It's an intake, so it's not hot. If you run near the exhaust just wrap the pvc in something heat resistant. It glues together and you can make any degree angle easily with the fittings available. Hell, you can heat it and bend it if you need to. It'll crush if you hit it from underneath, but if you stick it up high enough or run it close enough to something solid you could probably minimize the risk. You have just as much crush/pinch risk with flex pipe. It would also be more water tight than fernco couplings. Just a thought.

 

I wasn't aware flex pipe was an actual product that was corrugated. If I did this I'd plan on using smooth walled tubing that's flexible. Something that has a higher temp rating if possible. This could be run very very high up near the frame for protection.

 

And of course at the end of the video this douche has to throw in his completely unrelated and irrelevant political spiel...only furthering the stigma this fucker deserves.

 

Look into something like Pex pipe. I think they make that in larger diameters suitable for your idea.

 

After removing the entire intake system today I noticed the stock intake is corrugated. So I'm sure it makes a difference but I'd imagine the difference is slight. I'm thinking that that charge pipe looks like a larger diameter than the actual throttle body too so it probably doesn't matter.

 

Cutting that 3 inch hole is very scary but when it's all said and done like freaking sweet! And the looks you'll get is worth it!

if you go with the safari snorkel install it the way it says to from cruiser outfitters and be done with it. they are designed correctly and work perfectly when installed correctly so why mess with a proven design/system?

also on 4cyl models this is a no go as it would be extremely difficult to achieve due to the amount of space in the engine bay and also where the factory air box is and how its connected right at the hole in the fender.

i guess with the v6 from what i have seen it may be possible but, i don't see any reason to mess with it. fenders are not that expensive to replace when everything is considered.

i have to add that after watching the whole vid sure his home made snorkel may have saved the engine but, the rest of that truck is ruined.

also i'm impressed with the warn i can't believe it worked after being completely submerged like that and for that amount of time being underwater! i was sure the motor on that thing was going to crap right out. this guy killed that winch but, it still got him out of that hole thats the coolest part about this vid lol what a retard
