Toyotacrawler's M416 Resto!

I decided to cut it out and replace. Had to do that twice because the tub was not welded back on square the first time. Just not planning ahead and rushing things. It is sealed and I added one drain hole and plug. The tail lights are after market and made from plastic but look original. All the wiring was pulled and redone and added some small amber LED marker lights for some bling. I never had the landing foot/tounge jack so that's after market as well. The lid I had fabbed at a welders shop. Replaced the axle with a 3500# one from ABC trailer parts on line. I keep mine loaded with all of my camping gear and most of my fishing stuff. I still would like to extend the tounge and add a water tank with pump and heater for showers and dishes. Still a work in progress but never have time anymore. But it works great for now. Ok thanks man! I'll check that site out for sure! Do you by any chance have a pic of the drain you installed when you replaced the floor? When it comes to that point I will be lost. I would like to use the original style rubber stoppers if I can but I'm just not sure how to go about doing that since I have to replace the whole floor.

 

Drilled the hole and welded the female end in. Here you go....

I hope one day we can get these things done. There has to be about 6 layers of paint on mine, all at different levels of pealing off. Definitely needs to be sandblasted. I cringe at the thought of how much it's going to cost.

 

You are killing me here man! What a great job you did on your trailer. That is what I hope mine will look like someday. I am also not going for a full resto. Mine didn't have the original wiring and that is fine cause I would have changed it to 12v anyway.

The axle is my biggest question. I need to find an axle that will fit the stock Tacoma lug nut configuration. I already have rims for it. I also want the axle to retain the parking brake but I want to add electric brakes. Any thoughts as to how to get an axle with the parking brake and the abiltiy to use electric brakes would be greatly appreciated. Unless I shouldn't or don't need electric brakes? I'm thinking I do because of all the weight that will be going in this thing.

The floor on mine is not the greatest either and looks to be kind of thin in a few spots. The drain plugs are rusted out. I was thinking about Rhino lining it to give some strength instead of replacing the floor. Don't know if I'm thinking stupid here or what but those replacement floors are very expensive and I was planning on Rhino lining anyway. Again, real nice trailer you have there kilo.

 

Yea the tub on mine has a ridiculous amount of paint on it. At least 3 layers and the tub is coated with some kind of thick black tar. It absolutely has to be blasted. Cost is definitely on the high end around here.

 

Did you just use straight sheet metal for a floor replacement? What gauge? Also what is the part number on the drain plug? I am a complete noob when it comes to trailers. I don't weld either. Gonna cost me.

 

To tell you the truth I haven't even started calling the various sandblasters in the area. I know it's gonna be a lot because every part on this thing needs blasted and as you know, there are a lot of parts to these things. I just don't have the funds right now. Sucks! Especially after seeing another finished trailer like kilo's

 

Mine had several layers of paint as well. Even some of that tar crap on the tub. I had mine blasted certain parts at a time. Just went with what was ready to blast and what funds I had. I do recommend that you be ready for paint right after you sand blast it.

The axle I ordered from abctrailerparts.com. The prices are great and have what you need. Not too sure about electric and hand brake combo. I ordered mine to set up for electric brakes but doubt I'll go that route. It's a 3500# axle set up with 6 on 5.5 to match the tacoma wheel pattern. Now I just carry one spare at any given time. Having the hand brake would be nice.

I don't remember the floor thickness on the tub. Might be at the most 1/8". If you do replace the floor make sure the tub is square! You might even use something less thick and lay over and tack weld to save you $$ and time. You wouldn't have to cover the whole floor just most or areas of concern.

As far as the drain plug goes I can't remember where I got that from. It could have been Lowes or Home Depot? You could alway use a 2-3" piece of pipe that is threaded on both ends. Weld one end into the floor and cap the the other end. Should be easy enough.

I even welded in a spare tire winch/reel. Didn't work too good. Still need to tweak it some.

That's cool. I need the motivation! That floor looks great! I just wish there was a way I could get the ribs put in the plate after I redo my floor. Oh well no worries, A new floor with no ribs is better than a rotted out floor with holes.

 

You can always buy a bed from a small truck like a toyota or ford ranger at the junk yard. Measure and cut the floor out of the bed to use.

Good luck!! That's alot of work. Make sure you use some kind of mask so you don't inhale any of that stuff. It's dangerous. It's called CARC, Chemical agent resistant coating.

NEVER weld or cut CARC-coated materials.

DO NOT grind or sand painted equipment without high-efficiency air purifying respirators in use.

BE AWARE of CARC paint exposure symptoms; symptoms can occur a few days after initial exposure. Seek medical help immediately if symptoms are detected.

Unusable chemical agent resistant coating (CARC) mixtures are considered hazardous waste.

 

Yea, I wore a mask when sanding a small section of the frame today. I think I'm going to do the sanding outside though and not in the garage. Wayyyyy to much dust. I had a fan set up to pull the air out of the garage but it was still pretty dusty.
