front wheel adjustment nut

Hello fellow TACOMAWORLD friends. Does anybod know how to remove the front Bearings adjustment nut that has four holes? what special tool do I need? or does that just get done when the machine shop presses my new bearing into my old hub? I included a picture of my old bearings with the silver nut in the middle with 4 holes. I read somewhere's that the nut is torqued to 200 fb-OMG! Any help would be appreciated.

this came off a 2005 tacoma prerunner 2 wheel drive front bearing.

That looks different then my 4x4 bearings so I won't be much of a help. You have a front wheel adjusting nut I'm not familiar with.

See the PDF's I attached for some help. Look up the Toyota "SST" part number and see what specialty tool Toyota says it is and then see if something similar is available on the market that will do the same job.

When you do get the nut off take it to a shop to get the old pressed out and the new pressed in. I took mine to Napa and they were done in a couple hours for less then $20 per side (labor only - i supplied parts). Just be sure to get the right bearing for a pre-runner....and do not forget to get new seals and pack the bearing with good bearing grease.

You can also buy piece of 1/4 inch steel. Drill 5 holes in it. 4 holes smaller, then install 4 bolts that will fit in small holes. Center bolt needs to be bigger thats what you use torque wrench on it.

 

Sounds like a good Idea, but won't the center bolt turn when you try to adjust or tighten? 200 foot pounds is a lot of torque, did you do this already? do you have pictures of what exactly you're talking about?

better then paying toyota 80 bucks for a stupid tool hah?

Yep but for my LC which uses 3 point nut instead of 4 point. Its crude but it worked and costed me like $20 in scrap metal and bolts. I will get pic tomorrow. Too cold to open garage man

 

LOL , it's 60 degree's down here in TEXAS. Okay I can wait for the pictures later. I kinda get the Ideal I will start searching tomorrow for
1/4 inch steel, high grade bolts and stuff.........

Its easy. Take cardboard and trace 4 holes on it. Draw lines to criss cross them thats your center bolt. You need to find 4 small bolts that will fit in the holes in nut. Your center bolt should be as big as you can get. You install center one backwards so when you torquing it will try to tighten center bolt. Worst come to worst glue the sucker to metal or ask somebody to put few welds on it. I make my SS tools. Dont have money to buy stuff so I need to be creative

It's only 10 bucks on AMAZON, but was wondering if anybody else already ordered this particular one from amazon only to find out it's the wrong tool. Just a fyi, but I tried to rent the socket from Advanced, Napa, and another store and no one had it. The universal kit they rent did not have it either. I had to take both bearings to my stealership and they took the nut off for $50.

I really appreciate peoples help here on this forum. I just want to update my finding so that maybe it can help out the next guy having the same problem. I got my locknut socket today and it's exactly the correct fit to re-tighten the hub bearing. Hope this helps out the next person with the same problem and same truck; 2005 Tacoma V6 4.0 prerunner , two wheel drive , 4 door double cab. I bought it in Amazon for 10 bucks + shipping.

W1272 socket in the search box. Here is a picture of it. Let's just hope it holds up to 200 foot pounds of torque ...LOL

Have you tried it yet? If it works and you have no issues be sure to let everyone know so they can save themselves some cash.

 

Well I'm sure it will work cause I already measureup the socket to the nut and it fits lilke a glove it's just a matter of now taking my old hub to the machine shop so they can press my new bearing and I'll torque it in a vice. Should be done this weekend I will keep you'll posted though. Too bad There isn't a MFG out there that sells the hub and bearings already pressed in, easier swapt like that. I checked all around the internet and even the dealer and nobody has it for the 2005 V6 prerunner. TA TA FOR NOW!

 

They don't make them for the 4x4's either. If they did the cost would most likely be huge.

You should take a bunch of pics and do a quick write up. I'm pretty sure there isn't one for all you 2wd guys. All you would have to cover is that nut cause the 4x guys have a write up for the rest.

 

Sounds like a good Idea I'll see what I can do I'am not really good with diy writing. I need to find out how to torque the silver nut , I wonder if it's like regular bearing where you go a little pass over and then come back a little or just a one time 200 footpound tight and leave there?????????
