It's not actually, it's math and science. Lighting engineers don't just slap something together and say "there, that'll probably work". There are sophisticated computer systems that specifically map out and measure a lamp's light output (see this link on RallyLights for Hella isolux). It's quite precise and why headlights have improved drastically over the last several years.

Some states use these systems to test whether a headlight is within specification--something a HID kit would not pass. They also use these systems to properly aim headlights on cars these days. Not everyone does it, and you can align them using a wall and measuring, but it's nowhere near as precise.

Changing the bulb drastically will completely destroy the light pattern. I think on the link I posted earlier, there are some actual studies where they actually mapped out a vehicle headlight, comparing it from the OEM bulb to a plug-and-play HID kit. The results are pretty visible.

Actually, here's the link. You can scroll down to the image of the light output and see the difference:
    http://dastern.torque.net/techdocs/HID/HB1_HID_Retro.pdf

It's a lot of gibberish for people like me who aren't in the industry, but just look at the pictures at the bottom and it's easy to tell the difference.

I got a little over two years out of the Sylvania Silverstar Ultras. About $26 for the set on eBay. I liked them, very bright.

I've not had same issues with Sylvania SS or Ultras as has been posted about. Maybe handprints weren't wiped off or just bad luck or rough shipping or whatever. Lasted as long as any other halogens did. Hoping for same with the Philips.

All this bullshit and no one even brought up the fact that all these "white" lights are complete poop and a marketing ploy to trick you into buying them.

Putting a blue tint/filter over your bulb only decreases the lumen output and distance. Take that shit film off the bulb and it WILL be brighter at further distances.

You only think the light is brighter due to the "cool" white color in fact it's duller and you just got taken.

Narva Rangpower 50 for a non tinted good quality German made/engineered bulb at the SAME cost as the other crap brands. Can be purchased here http://www.candlepowerinc.com/products.pib.html

There is no blue tint or coating on the phillips xtreme bulbs, there is no color to them when on, they are made in Germany & for 20.00 a pr there was no taken to it. Full price at the auto parts would be closer to taken.

Where's the pics of the H7s? Remember, shitty fuckin ebay projectors don't use H4s and post up the ones in the orange packaging like on the first post.

Can you read H4 on that bulb? Read the caption under the pic. If the H7s in the orange pack had that blue on it you would be able to see it. I'll take one out of the housing and get a real hi res close up of the actual bulb and then y'all can try and point out the big bright ass blue ring. You wanna talk shit about colors but keep showin shit I'm not usin - H7s. Fun stuff.........

OK genius... here's the H7 box, it's the same bulb. See how it clearly says H7 on it? Notice the reflective flashy cap and oh, wait, a blue ring right next to it... Same as the other picture.

I don't understand what the big deal is... the bulb is tinted, if you like the light output, why argue?

LOL, I knew you could find it. It isn't nearly like all the half blue bulb bullshit y'all been postin either is it? I'll run with this shit as long as anyone else does and don't give a shit one way or another what people think about whether I has retros or kits in halogens or H7s or H4s or ebay housings or depot housings or whatever the fuck. I'm doing it just for fun just like everyone posting up about gospel of retros and all else is shit is doing everytime there is a lighting thread. Got 55w HID reverse lights in my halogen backup housings with a manual switch too, oh no!

 Looks like the same bulb B and I posted above, wait that's cause it is...

HID's for reverse light's is just a waste, the bulbs won't even warm up unless you spend a lot of time driving backwards. To each their own but that's a lot of hardware

Must be a manufacturing fluke, mine no has. Wait for pic of actual bulb. If each to their own then why the crusade to scorn and persecute non retro havers into converting in every lighting thread that comes up even when it has nothing to do with HID headlights?........Hold that thought, gotta go to a non-union quarterly bonus meeting for derpy color blind ebay certified lighting expert people........................more money for unapproved mods, lol. Oh wait, I can succumb to non peer pressure and go buy some proper retros for my depot BLHM housings and see the light and get right with all the lighting ayatollahs.

Reverse HIDs was sarcasm, sorry that was wrong I know.

Believe it or not, someone on here actually does have HID's in their reverse lights. I couldn't remember who did it and thought it was you after that comment

So the moral of the story is OP's lights aren't too bright he just has them aimed at peoples eyes.

Adjust your lights OP and you will be fine.

When you buy new bulbs look into the research on clear bulbs vs tinted.

Don't trust anyone but yourself and by all means don't seek the help of a color blind lighting professional :D
