What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

my 97 doesn't have a gas light..anyone else have an early 1st gen and not have a gas light?

Maybe the bulb is burnt out? I find it really weird that toyota didn't put a gas light in a 97...considering my dad's 87 pickup had one.

I have had the truck for 5 years and always wondered why it didn't have one.

 

yeah, it really sucks not having one. My gas gauge gets really inaccurate/bouncy lower than 1/4 tank. So knowing when my gas is actually low would be great.

 

I have not seen mine come on yet and i think i would have seen it by now. Im not willing to push those limits.

 

haha...I have ran my truck out of gas multiple times.

 

I have never run out of gas and ive heard it sucks. Not sure about the newer vehicles but my buddys car locked up and shut down. He lost all steering but luckily he was going slow. I cant imagine going fast around corner and it happening

 

Ive run out once, it gives you some warning by coughing a bit, then about 3 miles later it dies. You loose power steering and brakes but its not that bad.

 

yeah...it coughs and stutters a bit before hand...

If you are lucky you can start it after it dies and run on fumes for a few hundred yards

Your steering only locks up if you turn your key to "off" or "acc"

 

yeah I normally try not to run it dry like that because it's hard on the fuel pump but I was super busy that day driving all over the place and completely forgot I needed gas. My gas light bulb is burned out as well.

 

I am running my 2.0 SAWs at ~2.5" I initially found the ride a bit harsh but once I add a plate bumper and winch and a full set of BB skids, the ride has gotten better and better. They use a 650lb Eibach coil so they are designed to carry the weight. Might be a little stiff without any.

I actually started at 3" or maybe even a bit more but that was too much because of axle angles. The vibes were caused by the inner boot fins touching. I lowered it to 2.5" and added a diff drop kit. 2.5" seems to be the sweet spot for mine. At least for now.

I know you keep repeating that without having any real experience with them. Why? Mine now have over 30K on them and no rust at all. Folks who live in the rust belt may have rust issues but the same thing happens with uniballs, frames, and fenders too.

Unless you plan on doing a lot of high speed stuff, like desert type wheeling, the 2.0s will be more than enough coil/shock.

I just picked up a set of camburg UCAs too. Can't wait to get them mounted.

And what are the tabs on the UCA's in your picture for??

 

I am guessing the tab is for mounting an ABS line which mine doesn't have. I've seen pics of stock ucas that do have a line running along that area. I haven't opened the instructions yet so I'm not certain.

I don't mind not having ABS on the truck. I rarely get that agressive with it on pavement. Now the little corolla, well, that's a different story altogether. It is way to easy to overpower the tires on that. I am grateful for the ABS in it.

 

Mine has it... ABS is a bitch in the snow!
