o2 and air fuel ratio sensor......

check engine light and vsc light came on the other day. took the tuck to the dealer and they fixed it. said that o2 sensor and air/fuel ratio sensor had blown. would have cost $600 if i was out of warranty. starting to wonder how much out of pocket money ill have to spend on this truck when my warranty runs outs. has this happened to anyone yet?

 

Sounds like they did not know the difference and replaced both till they go it right.

 

So I'm the first that this has happened to on this board?

 

Can we hook an AFR gauge up to that sensor?

 

O2 sensor replacement should not exceed $200; if you do it yourself (and it's pretty easy) cost could be as little as $65. I'm wondering what they mean with an 'air/fuel ratio sensor' cause that's what the O2 sensor is.

I have no idea what any of this has to do with Vehicle Stability Control, if that's what the vsc light was..

 

i have a 2005 taco trd dcsb auto trans. with 147,xxx miles.lets see, i replace both o2 sensors. 59.99 a piece.2 weeks ago. original equipt. i replace origanal transmission, 2,000 miles ago. Trans came out of a 2007 wreck with only 11,000 miles on it. $1300 plus 650 for install.2 year parts and labor warrenty.

FYI, for parts you would be much better off if u buy mayor $ stuff out of wrecks. toyota told me $3900 for trans and 950 for install.

DO Your own maintance. Saves you more $

 

I have an air fuel sensor in my car. It's a wide band o2 and has a gauge with it to monitor AFR when playing around with the fuel maps on the piggyback ecu to get mixture right. Thinking they misspoke. No one here has ever posted up about having or exploiting this feature on a Tacoma that I've read about.

 

if you are gonna take them out, you might as well replace them. Amazon.com is my fav for emissions parts. for 02 sensors, you can use an O meter from wally world like 20 bucks, and test the wave forms per the service manual

 

Sorry, was just messin around with how the dealer worded what they told the OP. Wasn't really asking. I know they actually do that but it's not really worded that way unless you wanna justify it being so expensive to fix usually.

 

For $600 it sounds the dealer best have done more than just an O2 sensor... maybe MAF and OP didn't quite get the explanation?

OP also said the vsc light was on so it suggests something completely aside from an engine control was repaired too.

not confusing at all once you understand the system a little.

Anytime the check engine light comes on it will deactivate the VSC because they share inputs from the engine ecu. Since they are intertwined they don't want false signals going to vsc. It's a fail safe.

Also:

AF sensor is not the same as a 02 sensor.

They do go out from time to time.

So just where is the air/fuel sensor? Can't find a reference in the TSM and other than an O2 I've never heard of one so I'm thinking there may be an AKA...

 

AF sensor is before the cat converter. O2 is after.

AF monitors exhaust and adjust fuel trim accordingly. It's not an exclusive input but is heavy in it's relationship.
O2 monitors the cat primarily and it's ability to do it's job.

So for a V6.

Bank one sensor 1 Bank two sensor 1 are AF sensors
Bank one sensor 2 Bank two sensor 2 are O2 sensors.

 

I got ya... the A/F sensor is AKA the upstream O2 sensor, which is the way I know it. Never quite thought of it that way before but it does make sense

 

Yea they keep on changing the dam names on everything. But i learned upstream / downstream also. I think they have room full of people and their only job is to make new names for stuff just to qualify their existence.

 

OP, I don't think you have worry about out of pocket expenses too much. My truck is 10 years old and I have literally not spent one penny on repairs. I have done oil changes, brake pads, tires and wiper blades.
That was until last week. It must be the season for AF / O2 sensors, because my check engine light came on for the first time in 10 years, and it is the upstream sensor. I have ordered it online for about $80 and will install it myself. There have been quite a few posts recently about these sensors and error codes.

 

Things happen in waves. The P2197 code in our highlander came on just a few days ago. The VSC does come on with the check engine.

 

I'm dealing with the P2197 DTC myself. Here is the link dealing with it. It could be a vacuum leak, a bad relay, a bad sensor, low fuel pressure, a bad harness, and a few other things.

Just curious, are we all 2009's that are getting the P2197 trouble code?
