I personally like Mobile 1 in the recommended 5w-30 It is great stuff. Amsoil may be great stuff, I have never tried it and never will because it is not on the shelf to compete side by side with everything else. BMW/MINI actually use Castrol Full Synthetic in all of there cars as of 1998 or so. I even trust my life to Mobile 1 and use it in my GUNs! I think it not really what oil you use but that the oil you use gets changed at the recommended intervals.

I wasn't going to buy Amsoil for the same reason. It wasn't on the shelf. Then I found out they carried it at Napa Auto Parts in my area. I just called the store and it is $9.00 a quart. About the same as Mobil 1 at the same store. This is Amsoil 100% Synthetic High Performance Motor Oil. It says on the label that it is good for 25,000 miles for normal use and 15,000 for severe use or one year. Try a little Amsoil in you gun and I bet the parts work a little more freely. I never thought of using it in my guns. Maybe I'll try a gear oil that's safe to use with brass synchro's.

I think any synthetic changed at 5K religously will work great. I use Mobil-1 because I can grab it at Walmart. I'm more selective about the filters and will only use Toyota filters. In critical applications I think Redline makes the best you can buy. The synthetic bases are pretty similar, but the additive packages can vary a good bit. I know people who race and they pretty much all use Redline oils. Some of them even have sponsorships with other oils and dump them out. They refill the bottles with Redline so nobody gets a panty wedged.

As side note, I recently had an opportunity to look inside a 5VZ-FE. The story doesn't matter. The motor had 100K on it and the sludge built up in that motor was amazing. Thick tarry goo on everything. Supposedly it had been changed at regular intervals. It's not the first time I have seen this. That's why I do a Seafoam treatment to the oil a couple hundred miles before the dump.

Lemme guess... 5VZ exhaust cams were meshed-gear driven from the intake cams. Makes sludge 8 days a week.

Thank goodness the 1GR has slave chains to the exhaust cams.

Schaeffer Oil 9000 Full Syn/K&N filter. Oil analysis for oil change at 15,000 miles. The higher the oils flash point the longer it will hold up. Add in friction modifiers that further reduce heat (and engine wear) and it gets better. 80% of engine wear is at cold start up. All oils do their job just not as long. I would not run napthic based dino oil more than 3000 miles as heat will take it's toll due to low flash point. It's rare to find Schaeffer on a store shelf but it's my choice. When I buy it I get a qrt of oil not a half qrt of marketing. BTW syn oil was developed during WW2 by the Germans no matter what marketing might tell you.
Earlier someone mentioned Shell Rotela. Be careful as diesel oil may have more ppm of zinc and that ain't good for catalytic in gasoline engine.

Quaker State! 11 bucks for the 5 quart jug at Walmart. Put a few cars over 100k on it and never had a problem. Use a 5k oil change interval on everything just cause its easy to remember 5, 10, 15 etc. My son's 2002 Malibu is at 120k on QS 5w-30 and doesn't burn oil at all between changes and still gets 25 mpg. Looking into the fill at the valve train shows no sludge and minimal deposits. So for me why pay more.

I use Mobil 1 and I stayed at a Holiday Inn last night... In other words...don't waste your money.

Unless you're going to go 10K miles between changes there is no reason to use synthetic. I've owned Toyota trucks since 1983 and have always used conventional oil(GTX 10-40) and have never had any problems such as sluge build-up. I change my oil every 3-5K miles and have never had an issue. Sure synthetic oil says you can go 10K miles beween changes but have you seen oil with 10K on it? It's blacker then the sky on moonless evening. Save your money folks, and use conventional oil and change it every 3-5K miles. Even ij my classic 65 Mustang I used conventional oil and change it as soon as it starts to get black.....which is about 2-3K miles. The inside of that engine is spotless... Save your money guys....

I can guarantee you if there was major sludge build-up there was no regular oil changes done. I've been in the automotive business, mainly classic cars for over 30 years and have seen some nasty stuff and irresponsible car owners.

You might still have good viscosity, but I guarantee you that oil was so black you could see thru it. I bet your oil filter is cramed with sludge..

I have a Volkswagen Jetta that i've taken through hell and back - Missed oil changes, redlining and overheating, nothing too retarded but i have abused it. It has 250,000 KM on it, i guess around 130,000 M, and i've used Castrol Syntech 10w 30 the whole time. It still runs like a top, i do 8,000 KM oil changes, and have never had an engine problem. Im POSITIVE that if i had been running conventional oil my car would be a heap of crap.

I have been using AMSOIL in my new tacoma, because from what research I have done it has the best longevity, and leaves the least engine residue out of competitive synthetics (Mobil1, Pennzoil Plat., Quaker, Castol Syn.).

Those are the two synthetic oils i have had experience with, and honestly I would recommend either one. As far as this forum goes, anyone reading it to find out "Which oil is best" isn't going to find any answers because they will basically be reading everyone else's opinions on the oil they have used or heard of. My advice is to search the internet for the facts on different types of oils and form an opinion based on that. I chose AMSOIL but after paying for a few gallons i can see why people might choose Mobil1/Pennz Plat.

Mobile 1 synth w/o a doubt. AMSOIL is a ripoff, no better than mob1. Those internet bs tests are a JOKE. Those who tell you they have inside info that mobile 1 synth now uses inferior additives are blowing smoke up your azz.

Did regular oil analysis on my motorcycle.
I was not impressed with Royal Purple.
Interestingly, Castrol GTX performed as well as the standard synthetics and better than Royal Purple, but the top of the heap were Mobil-1 V-Twin and Amsoil MCV.
    Both outperformed the automotive Mobil-1.
