What I need from everyone are their stories about going to the stealership, mechanic, etc., and how they tried to rip you off.

So I need YOUR PERSONAL STORIES (not a buddy's for family member's) about how the stealership tried to rip you off and how much money you saved by fixing it yourself.

I saved $800 on the compass/temp gauge from this forum on the thread that showed how to do that. just had to buy the soldering iron some solder. Also did the heat and A/c blower motor resistor from that thread and I believe it was posted that it cost around $350.. for that and I paid $42 for the resistor. this forum has helped me save a bunch and the Fire at Chris's family property we all came together and helped out a family in need for someone most of us don't even know

Was quoted 700 to do replace the bushings on the power steering rack. Ended up fixing it myself for 22 dollars in parts and basic tools. Read how to do it from a sticky linked to another site.

Well not with the Taco, but my 1st car I had was a 88 Chevy Cavalier. I was 17yo at the time, I went to a Stealership to buy it, it was cold, the guy says let me warm it up for you. Didn't really think nothing of it really, said ok, took it for a test drive, ran fine, everything worked. Brought it home, after about a week I noticed on cold mornings, everytime I went to drive it, steering was very stiff untill car warmed up. Come to realize that the steering rack was bad in it. Fortunately I took auto Mechanics in High school, and replaced the steering rack my self, and was a learning experience for me.

So that asshole dealer knew it was bad, and warmed up the car so I wouldn't notice the stiff steering. Car was bought as-is, so no fighting it.

Hope thats the kind of story your looking for.

Yeah I know but what I am hoping is that I can get a centralized thread where people post these things.

I know I am being lazy on my part and I should do my own research for my own fucking paper lol but I also hope that enough people post useful things in here that other people will see that doing their own maintenance isn't that difficult.

    neglect, mostly.
i did the compass/temp gauge fix on my tacoma for free too. that saved some major dough.

i also was told by a local audio store to spend a lot of money and to get an aftermarket amp because they did not cary the Pac tato adapter i need. after consulting members on this site i have decided to ignore him, save the money and buy the adapter and install it all myself. . . . . on a totally different note, will you help me install my head unit and adapter next month?

I learned all about the TSB repairs from TW. I have the annoying windshield noise and a couple other things I will be getting fixed under warranty. But if not for this site I would have no idea. Huge help.

Main reason I don't let dealers or mechanics work on my vehicles anymore is because cavender toyota here in SA scratched my passenger side fender and then played it off as no big deal, then said it came in like that, then said how about next time the oil change is free. My rebuttal is that a consumers car should leave in the same condition as it came in. Now I have had very good experiences with discount tire as far as them working on my truck.

I would have raised hell. The car should leave in the same condition as it came in or better. Why would I pay someone to do something I could do cheaper and them not fuck shit up? Sounds like a win win in my book lol

Oh don't worry I wrecked their waiting room and at the same time saying "its not a big deal right?"

Had a guage cluster poop out. I was 2000 miles out of warranty. But because I did every service with them, they paid for the $700 cluster, and I paid 1 hour labor.

Not want you wanted, but its my contribution.

Actually no this is useful. I will also need material that shows that there are still some places out there that still do right by the customer.

Not a TACO story but here you go for getting ripped off at a repair shop. My wife drives an Audi Allroad, and the oil needed to be changed but I was working an outage so i had no time to do it. They charged her 90$ for an oil change. When I called the shop they gave me some B*&^$%&T about how they had to drop the belly pan and do all this other stuff. They said it took them 2 hrs to do it, which i know is B/S because I can do it in about 20 min even without a Floor jack or a lift (the oil filter is right in front on the bottom of the engine, no need to jack it up, unless you are super lazy). Never went back to that shop for anything, I just taught myself to become a driveway mechanic.
