Best Body Lift Kit

What is the best body lift kit (moderately priced) for my taco? I have a 1999 prerunner with bilstein 5100's in the front. Spacers would work for me.

We get asked this question all the time. “Why are most spacer lifts be bad”? Well spacer lifts can cause a few problems and cost you big dollars to fix. First there are a few different kinds of spacer lifts, there is the kind that just bolts on the top of the existing shock that spaces it down to give lift. The problem that can come from running this kind of spacer is the shock will now be allowed to droop to far downward causing binding and damage to ball joints, 4×4 axle cv’s, and steering joints. The other issue you might have is since the shock is now just pushed down when you bottom out the suspension on or off-road instead of hitting the bumpstops you will just bottom out the shock. This can lead to some hefty damage. The next kind of spacer lift available are the preload spacers. These will usually cause the coil springs to be preloaded to give lift. The side effect to this type of lift is the shock valving is not designed for the extra preload of the spring giving the ride a bad bouncy feel that sometimes feels uncontrolled. And in some cases we have seen the spring coilbind causing damage to the shock and the frame. This is because the spring is designed to move about 1/2 its total length so when you pre-load them they are now compressed to much so near bottom out they will bind before you hit the bumpstops.

How big a lift are we talking? 97toyota got it right if we were speaking of spacer lifts, but we are talking about body lifts. Two different things.

Body lifts are cheap, this makes them a great option for the uninformed buyer. But, they can take longer and usually more work to install with really no value add. If you are looking for an extra inch to clear a little bigger tire...sure, go for it. One inch is as high as I would ever concider with a body lift. Past that you really start to screw the structural integrity of the stock body mounting.

Save money now and spend more later. This statement can be used for both body lifts and good suspension lifts(not to be confused with lift spacers).

Save money by buying a cheaper option, and spend more down the road for repairs.

OR

Save your money now and spend more(but less than repairs) on a quality suspension lift later.

It seems like everyone around here has a 3 in body lift. thats just pretty standard for if you own a truck. Deff would recomend a suspencion lift though. its a more noticable lift. a suspencion lift will look more like the height your putting on.

 

I would agree that body lifts are not the right choice. I just got my 5100's installed and am just not fully satisfied. I like them a lot but I am still looking for more lift (mainly in the front). That is the reason why I asked about a spacer lift/body lift.

 

do you have the 5100's on stock coils set to 2.5?

if you put some toytec coils on there you'd get closer to 3.5"

 

spacer and body lifts are not the same thing. Spacer lifts refer to suspension spacers.

And your right, a body lift is not the right choice. But adding a body lift to your truck because you dont like the way it looks is like wearing a toupee when you dont like your hair. Not the best solution and it looks like shit.

 

I know no one on here likes body lifts, but its what ever u like. I have had a 3'' body lift on a 92 Yota for 15yrs. with no problems at all. I also totaled a 93 w/a 3'' body, & not one block was broke or moved. Id rather have a susp. lift over a body, but like I said, its what ever u like.

 

How about a spindle lift since you have a prerunner

I went with the OME 3" kit and it looks good and works well. Are ypu planning on a winch bumper, if so the 5100s will have to go anyhow. like I said in my previous post, save up the money now and buy a quality lift later.
