Where to mount tweeters

Debating where to mount my 25mm silk dls tweeters. Wondering if I can get some feedback from people using them in the sail panel, what effect does it have on the sound being so far from the mid' they will be getting 100rms each.

 

I don't have them in the sail panel of my Tacoma, but have on previous vehicles, so I hope you don't mind my personal observations.

In general, mounting the tweeters up high in the door or at a sail panel will raise the apparent sound stage. However, depending on the crossover frequency, and your ear's sensitivity to it, there can be an effect where voices appear to be moving around (low notes with the mid-bass, highs with the tweeter). Also, with the sail panel, I usually found a dash mat becomes more important in order to cut down on reflections (windshield can't be helped). I personally think it helps widen the stage up high, but maybe not everybody would agree.

I also might think twice about up high with a metal dome, but you already specified a silk dome.

Since an enclosure doesn't matter, easiest things is to use a bit of double-sided carpet tape and try out some different spots and angles. Good luck with whatever path you choose.

Edit: Just re-read your post -- 100 Watts each, and I thought having 75 each to mine was overkill (w/150 each to the mid-bass).

I put my new tweeters in place of the stock ones...

 

Same here, + I put one next to my components in the door.

 

Stock position here, I have Kicker KS13's.

You'll need some different mounts for that size though.

I've been thinking about building a mount for the area that is formed where the windshield and the dash meet. Reason being is that pushing the tweeters as far away from you as possible is ideal. Seems like a lot of work though. I'd also considered cutting up the A-pillar but that's not exactly appealing for obvious reasons either.

 

I'm tempted to say, "as long as you are using a Sundown amp it doesn't matter, they will sound amazing", but that would be rude.

However, I am planning to attempt to mount my Seas tweeters in the sail panel as soon as they get here. I will let you know how it goes and give you my impressions so that we don't have to waste two perfectly good sets of sail panels if it doesn't sound good with flush mount tweeters. I am a little concerned with reflections and it would be firing more or less into the side of the instrument cluster on the driver's side.

 

Which seas?

 

I have a spare set of sails in my garage now - I will be trying the CSS tweeter in the stock location, and if I dont like it there I will move it around.

I prefer stock locations for a variety of reasons, but I was planning on a different tweet when I bought them...

 

Those tweets will work in the stock locations I'm pretty sure. They worked in mine. Just dont glue them to the door panel like I did lol

 

Prestige 27TFFNC/G. I know must people tend to like the aluminum version better, but since these will likely be visible, and I still want a stealth install, I wen't with the fabric dome for the honeycomb grill.

 

I ran the alums a couple years ago and really enjoyed them. Crazy at that price point and still my favorite workhorse tweeter. I prefered them low and away off axis in my jeep liberty. Those will look great and let me know your impressions on them.

I will be running the SB17NRXC35-4 and the seas 2-way active. I am considering 3-way as well, but then I add a passive XO and cut my mids from 150 wpc to 50 wpc, which was part of my thought process in going with such a sensitive mid/tweet (92 & 91 db/2.83v respectively.)

 

I'm running what is more or less the metal equivalent tweeter (active), the Seas 27TAFNC/D, and have it crossed at 2.7KHz with no issues, 70 Watts/channel, stock Toyota location. It's the only metal tweet I would run with a high physical placement (sail, upper door, etc.), so I personally wouldn't be afraid to push full rated power to your silks. Of course that all depends on your preferences in a tweeter (clarity vice in your face argument, etc.).

Don't know how SB's will match up, but the metal Seas tweet plays pretty well @ 2.7 IMO. Seas claim is down to 2.5KHz, but I didn't like their sound there. Tried them up at 3.2 for a while and went back to 2.7. I seemed to notice the sound "location" moving around in voices at 3.2 that doesn't seem to bother me at 2.7. I have them matched up with the Seas U18RNX/P woofer (published to play up to 4KHz).

Of course each install varies, bla, bla, bla.

 

Looks like lbridges answered your question for me... with 2.7 and 3.2 I'm guessing your running the clarion unit? The 775USB unit? Thats whaI ran and loved that head unit.

Like said it depends. Start at 3k and go from there. It depends on placement and what mid your running. Some mids have great midrange clarity while alot are pure midbass. I had them matched with a set of Mach 5 audio 6.5s. Great set-up that couldnt be beat for double the price.
