If you go solo backpacking often and go deep enough to where if something happened you would be screwed, a personal locator is worth the money. they are pricey but they always have a signal and you can use them to check in periodically with a worried spouce or parent.

What kind of stove is this? I googled "side jet design alcohol stove", came up with a lot of things similar but none with the open top.
I looked at the penny stoves, looks like way too much work for the same flame I could get from this stove.

awesome! I want to see that pretty bad. I love the survival movies too. You should check out Alone in the Wilderness. It is an older movie but really cool.

That's the same type I have. It's really easy to use. I'm still trying to come up with a windscreen for it though. Here's where I found it http://zenstoves.net/BasicSideBurner.htm

    awesome thanks!

I may end up using the windscreen I have for my MSR Whisperlite stove and just trim it down as necessary.

It was good...my girl must have a crush on Liam Neeson as much as she wanted to go see this movie with me!

I want to talk about some of the movie but I'll end up giving parts away...so go see it!

No prob. I made one out of Miller's aluminum bottles recently and it's a lot stronger. The thicker stuff is a pain to work with though.

Since I'm stuck waiting for my squash to cook, here are a couple kayaks I'm looking at as soon as I sell my current one.

    Wilderness Systems Ride 135

    Jackson Cuda

After paddling both, I'm leaning towards the Ride 135. They even have a Ride 115 I may try...it's 2' shorter than the 135 (the number in a kayak model indicates the length) and it's a bit wider. Since I pretty much only paddle in salt I have to find a good balance of tracking, speed, and stability.

i got a date to go see this sometime this week....just hope i can pay attention to the movie:D
i would go with the 115....i like shorter kayaks. they seem to track a little better for me....down side is that they usually aren't as stable.

I would go with the Ride 135 too. W.S. is a really good name too. I think the 135 will be a good length for you but I have a 11' yak and it doesn't track for shit. I am constantly adjusting and correcting it. But... it does pretty well at maneuvering. I am thinking about selling mine and getting a sit on top W.S.

I'll let you know which one I end up getting. Once I sell my current yak I'm going to go up there and demo all 3 kayaks at once to make my final decision (Ride 115, Ride 135, and Cuda). I plan to do a good review to for whichever I choose - my buddy is going to help me create a website for an outdoors blog.

After the recent discussion on first aid I started looking around at local options for training and ran across NOLS. They provide classes across the US. I may sign up for one since its been years since I've had any first aid training and there are a couple of classes scheduled near me. The link below takes you to their entire class schedule.

I am in the process of making one of those from an aluminum water bottle. Lets just say my ghetto style tools aren't making it very pretty. lol He just put my cuts to shame!

Alright... here is the stove I just made out of one of those metal water containers:

Looked like that with the mouth piece up top.

I took a little box that is approx 60 mm high, laid my sharpie on it and circled the bottom of the bottle then flipped it over after taking the cap AND cutting the little ring around the top off and did the same thing using the same box. I cut them with the Dremel and then cut out 4 half circles along the mouth of the bottle. I pressed the top inside the bottom then spaced my jets 1/2" apart and below where the 2 pieces meet and used my old drill press to punch out the jets. That is all I had to do. The cuts are ugly but... it works. It brings approx 2 cups to boil in about 4-5 mins give or take.

    Here she is.
