Air Bags while running through the desert in a DD??

I tried searching but didn't really find my answer. I use my truck as a daily but eventually will be taking it through some trails here in the desert.. I have a prerunner so I won't be doing any crawling. But my question is how feasible is it to run air bags with a 3" lift and the occasional trip to the dirt and I do tow from time to time. I do know that there is potential for them to get punctured but my biggest concern is how will the trails affect the bags?

 

have never actually had the air bags,a buddy does and says great for towing and daily driving.

Not the airbags in the steering wheel or dash... Rear helper air bags to help level the truck when towing or just level the truck in general...

 

My thoughts too. i wouldn't race Baja with bags, but as long as they aren't under pressure, you should be okay.

Those things are pretty thick, I wouldn't worry *too* much about a rock or something flipping up and puncturing them...

I had Ride Rite air bags on my '05 DC Off Road 4WD, to fix the soft rear spring harsh ride/ bottoming. They were awesome... great in the desert and Baja... loaded truck or empty... just adjust the pressure! 15 psi empty to 45 psi heavy load... raises the truck too.

 

Seems to me you would add premature wear on them and shorten the life of the material much more. I would think it's not a good idea but not much harm done if you do that on a limited basis either.

 

I took my ride rites up on the Oregon Dunes and was looking at how the bags responded with flex, my gut feeling is to put straps on the axle to keep the axle from going too far and ripping open a bag

So how did they do?

 

dont you get less flex with the bags? dont know if that matters to you or not

 

They did fine, my concern was that it was the airbags themselves that determined the limit of travel so I felt that straps that limit the travel to no more than what the airbags could handle would keep them from possibly getting damaged.

 

Gotchya... Guess when I install mine, i'll jack the truck up enough to check what's limiting my down travel?
