Same here.. Most of my vehicles I've owned were just 'vehicles'.. My Taco is part of the family now like my dogs are.

Good thing the dogs and the Taco get along.

sometime has transpired since my last response. no, my tacoma isnt perfect. but DAMN!! i love it. i just got back from another long distance hunting trip. fully loaded truck, including some firewood. i got 23 mpg (22.9) from LA to phx. stunning.

i am on the stock battery, and my truck never failed to start even in freezing temps. i need to fix a few tarnished bits..but this thing is damn reliable.

Last Thursday I got my first Tacoma it's my 2nd truck I've ever owned and don't think I will EVER own another truck. It's not only a great truck but just plain fun to drive I look at every morning wondering why the hell I didn't buy one sooner.

I tried for years to find a car i liked. I had a jeep lifted it tinkered w/ it modded it, got sick of it and got a brand new wrx b/c i thought having a fast car would be fun. modded that went fast, got bored bought a samurai while i owned my wrx thinking i just missed the off roading it wasnt enough, sold both. bought another jeep thinking i missed the jeep. Did the same thing got sick of it sold it. Now i have my taco. And i have only had it a few months, but man i agree w/ the person above i dont know why i didnt think of one of these sooner. Just having a pick-up bed has come in handy so many time i have eliminated my need for a mx trailer and all. No more lugging trailers and worrying about parking, no more struggling to get to speed on the interstate, and tons of versatility and a comfortable highway ride (compared to my jeeps). I know it seems i have not owned the truck long enough but i know i am going to LOVE this truck! i have never been happier in anything i have owned.

However the gas mileage is NOT what i expected, and i dont understand these 21+ mpg's everyone has b/c im lucky to get 15-16 and thats w/ a light foot and if it got any lighter id be holding up traffic. But oh well i was not worried about the gas mileage just wanted versatility and a reliable highway vehicle AND THIS TRUCK IS IT.

I"m happy with the backup camera.....with my Nissan Frontier I have to back up/go forward a few times,...getting out and in the driver's seat and walking back to look at the boat trailer hitch and tow ball to get it aligned right.
Now I can see it all in my Tacoma's backup camera...NICE~!

Good gas mileage has never been one of the strong points for the Taco's. I didn't buy mine for the fuel economy, but I also thought that it would be better. I have averaged 18.4 mpg from when my truck was new. Originally it was rated 18-22 so I figured that I would get at least 20 since I drive cars fairly easy and I've gotten top mpg in all of the other cars that I've owned. I have gotten over 22 mpg on a handful of tanks, but it's a rare occasion. I did notice that I got better gas mileage as my stock tires were wearing out. When I replaced them my mpg started going down again. Part of the problem might be the stock Dunlop tires. My all-time best gas mileage was 23 mpg. I got that on Highway 1 in California where you have to do 50-55 mph due to traffic. At 65-70 mpg getting 21-22 is tough. When I carry my pop-up camper on the back it gets 15-16 mpg. That camper weighs about 1000 lbs. Another problem is that California adds ethanol to the gas here. People from other states that don't have ethanol say that they get 2-3 mpg better than I do. I added a tonneau cover about 6 months ago that helps the mpg a bit on long trips, but it probably costs me a few mpg when I drive in the city. Some people say that using 91 octane or higher fuel helps the mpg too, but I have yet to try it.

As for everything else the truck does everything that I've needed it to do. I've used it for camping, long trips, hauling stuff, hauling people, and commuting. I find it more useful than an SUV (I used to have a 4Runner) because of the bed. The ride is comfortable, but you have to remember that it's still a truck.

On top of all that the resale value of these trucks is incredible as is the case with a lot of Toyota's. I see similar trucks to mine being sold in the high teens and even the low 20's. This is probably due to Toyota raising the prices of the new Taco's. I plan to keep mine for at least another 10 years...unless I really like the next generation Tacoma's when they come out.

    Mostly love my truck.

I was actually pretty disappointed until I discovered TSBs.

After AT shift point TSB, A/C clicking TSB, and rear spring pack TSB I have a totally new truck.

I love the truck I have now, but before I would have given it a 7 out of 10.

Happy? Very much so after only 4 months of ownership!

My only regret - not finding a DCLB SR5 (mine's the SR5 SB), but I got what I could afford for a new 2011 paying in cash at the dealer. If the LB was available on a lot within a reasonable distance from any dealers in the color I wanted, I would have jumped on it.

I love my Xrunner, the structure is ok the things I wish would be different for buying at 27k are

    1. Faster engine, for the same cost Damn subies are quick compared to us.

    2. Better tranny, everyone hates the toyota tranny

    3. better mpgs

So pretty much the xr to me personally is for looks off the lot. I had to spend money to handle better and go faster which sucks to me compared to a suby or evo. They're quick, great handling and pretty good mpg for about the same price.

To be completely happy with mine I would have to swap tranny ($4k), supercharger ($2-4k) handling traction bars etc ($1-2)

So and about 8k worth of mods to be up to par.

I'm just glad I didn't buy my xr new..I wish they would've dropped in the v8 like the rtr xrunner .
