MPG Experiences; 4x4 Double Cab 2008-12

I am new to the forum so take it easy on me haha. Here we go:

Getting a 2008-12, Black Double Cab, 4x4, with 0-50k. Just trying to find the right deal.

Want to:
- Leveling kit, or 3" Lift
- Bull bar
- Steps, something like this - http://www.autoanything.com/nerf-bars/61A4999A0A0.aspx
- Larger/more rugged-looking tires. Like Allterrains or something in that nature.

Interested in how bad the feul economy drops off with these mods.

I am going to try my best to sound like I know what im talking about, I am only 16, but we all have to learn sometime haha - Could changing the air intake, or some fuel efficient mod balance the drop off in MPG? Or get close?

trucks like ive been seeing, I would be showing them off every chance I could. Post picks of your ride, similar to the list above, and list your year, mods, and MPG (average, city, highway, idc)

Welcome from Flowery Branch. I can't say about the mpg's, but just put on some aftermarket wheels and tires a couple of days ago. We'll see if it affects the mpg on mine anyway. But before I averaged 19.5 with the stock sport wheels. More in the summer time but stay around there overall.

 

Toytec Ultimate 3" Suspension Lift, 285/75/16 BFG AT KO's, Flowmaster Catback Stainless Dual Exhaust, and K&N Intake.....lost about 1 mpg around town with gentle driving.......Driving to NC this weekend and will know about highway MPG....BTW that was about 16.5 mpg around town.

 

Welcome.. first off, don't expect great mpg's from a truck. Especially with looking at a lift. I'm gonna assume your gonna run 32-33 inch tires. I have a 3" lift running 33" Nitto All terrains. Last tank I averaged 17.7 with about 80-90% highway. Around 335 miles on a tank. Most tanks I'm between 16-17 with 60/40 city and highway. Intakes won't make a noticeable difference. staying below 2k rpms is the best. automatic 2nd gens get better mpg's than manuals.

My dad wanted me to get a car, like the new Civic Si (23/32 mpg) or something since I am going to be driving alot, but we agreed that I could get a truck if I paid the difference in the gas. So, I am just trying to keep it as fuelly as possible.

Would a leveling kit be better than a 3" lift, or would you not notice the difference?

 

That wont make a difference. the size and weight of the tire is what does it. If your planning on wheeling it at all, don't go with a leveling kit. Your best bet will be some billy 5100's up front. Next up will be a 3" kit. If your really worried about mpg's.. don't lift It.. or just dont get a truck. The tacos still get decent mpg's.. but if your commuting a lot.. it may be better to think on it.

 

I am not sure on the mods but stock I have gotten as high as 23 MPG, and my last take was 13 1/2 MPG. If you are going to be driving a lot you may be better off getting a small car for now and a truck later when you are not commuting as much.

 

I get about 16.5 with my new lift. Check out my fuelly stats, when stock I topped 20MPGs a few times on long trips. I miss the MPGs, but wouldn't trade them in for my lift!

Here is my gas mileage chart. Driving is about 60/40 highway/city. I have a DCSB 4x4 off road with a TRD exhaust and 265-70-R16 load range D tires (stock size). I drive like a granny, with the occasional floor it at a red light. Never go over 70 on the highway. I think it should be a little higher, but I don't drive with the sole purpose to conserve gas...I drive like I want, and try to drive slowly as much as my foot will let me.

 

Get a suspension lift!

 

I run my own aquarium fish business and current alot of fish forums, and I feel like this question is one of those questions that all the newbs always ask and gets annoying after a while.

Suspension lifts work by using taller coils for the front and an add a leaf in the rear. Spacer lifts and blocks just throw a billet block on top of the stock shocks and a lift block under the leaf springs. The ride can suck with rear blocks and spacers up front can cause some damage to the suspension components.

Google "Why are spacer lifts bad" and you'll come up with a good article by Camburg.

Does anyone know how fix the mileage for bigger tires. I finally did two fill ups but my 35s mess up the actuall miles gone

 

What ap is that?

 

Plug in your stock size into 'current size', then plug in the size for your 35's into the 'new tire size' and calculate. The Revolutions per Mile will be given in %, for example mine says 3.6% difference.
Take your trip ODO mileage x 1.036 = actual miles driven that trip. (plug your 2 digit percentage into the multiplier Mileage x 1.0XX = Actual Mileage).

This is awesome Pugga. Thanks! I've been doin it wrong the whole time. Lol. So, for example.. mine.. my last tank was 337 miles.. I put 19 gallons in. So, I took the stock tire size, and my new size of 285/70/17 and it gave me a 6.8 difference. Then 337 x 1.068 = 359.9 miles.. divided by 19 gallons it took to fill back up.. gives me 18.9. Correct?
