Depends on the angle of impact you're protecting from. I just walked outside and looked too and the skidplate does an EXCELLENT job at protecting from vertical instances (those heading straight up from the ground) of impact. And of course that's it's main function. There is an angle roughly 45 degrees off vertical that could have an already moving rock bounce up from the ground and into the slot between the skidplate and bumper but that would be quite impressive.

sounds like they just showed that toyota was to blame for any damage to the motor (other than the hole in the rad) since you didnt have proper indication there was a problem to prevent further damage.

DUDE I had the exact same thing happen to me old 05 only after 2 weeks of having it. I had a piece of surveyors stake come up inbetween my skid and bumper, go off my air conditioner condesor and put a 4x4 inch hole in my radiator. My cost was abou the same $800+

    Major suckage for you dude.

No money, all went to truck...
that's good the thermostat failed. If the engine is damaged, the responsibility is on Toyota.

Exactly and I'll be letting them know that as soon as they start up my truck after replacing the radiator.

That's good they are changing the thermostat. It should always be changed anytime an engine overheats no matter what the reason.
But, it doesn't notify you that an engine is overheating. If they told you that, someone is blowing smoke your way or doesn't know wth they are talking about.
Also, like a previous poster said, check the A/C condenser close in the area the hole is in the old radiator. I'm not that familier with 2nd gens, but it does cover most of the radiator on most vehicles I've seen.
Anyway, just my .02 cents worth. I hope you get it fixed right and don't have anymore trouble with it.

make sure they check to compression on each cylinder to make sure its still in spec. that will be a good indicator of how much damage was done to the engine

    .
I could see this happening to the radiator with a sharp object. And protection from the bottom is not really there without a decent skid plate.

Yep, now it sounds like a "Golden BB" shot from a sharp rock or small piece of metal.

OP, good luck with this and don't let some on here beat you up ... things just happen sometimes ... no matter what you do or say.

Post a pic when you get it back.

It would be interesting to see what exactly happened? A little hole or complete blow out. And how exactly they know it was a rock?

I had a 2000 jeep that had radiator problems. At about 10K I noticed the plastic cap ends that are bonded to the alumium where leaking at the seam. It was replace under warrentee. But the guy told me if I was driving at freeway speeds and it blew out and if I did not turn the engine off within seconds I could have ruined the engine. So Hopefully since the Toyo brain shut it down for you and you are ok? Who knows if yours had a weak point to begin with?

It's pretty much SOP to replace the thermostat in these situations (busted radiator, broken hoses, etc). Due to the stress of quick temperature changes, blockages caused by redistribution of sludge, and similar, the thermostat would most likely fail within a short time anyway, resulting in yet another trip to the shop - with the customer thinking the shop screwed up the earlier repair (not good for customer relations).
