    Hey guys,

I've done a lot of searching on this but it seems that everyone says to go with an OME system if you are getting an ARB bumper and winch. I've used OME equipment in the past and was not happy with their products. I want to go with coilovers when I lift my truck and I want to make sure they will be strong enough to support an ARB bumper and Warn winch in the future.

From what I have read FOX or ICON seem to be the coilovers to go with but I can't find a spring rate for the ICON's. I know the FOX have a 600 lb spring rate and I believe factory springs are 620 lbs so I don't know if I want to go FOX if they will be lower.

Also, my goal is to max the coilovers out at 3.5" of lift, will one be better at holding that height than the other?

Anyone who has experience with this I would really appreciate your input.

What was your bad experience with OME stuff? Not bashing, just curious as I have my mind set on 886 to support the arb bumper in the front, and dakars out back. I just havent pulled the trigger yet.

Factory spring rate is 540 #/in. I believe King makes a 700# spring if you want to avoid OME and want a higher spring rate.

My Kings have a 650# spring rate but you can get them with the 700# spring rate from Down South Motorsports. I would call these guys tell them what you have and what you are looking for they will hook you up.

My dad and a buddy both had OME set-ups on their 1st Gen. Tacomas. My dad had a spring snap on his at 30k miles and my buddy's Tacoma actually had worse ride quality after changing the suspension to OME shocks and springs. Don't get me wrong, I've heard plenty of good stories but the spring snap scared me away considering it wasn't that old, my dad barely puts 5k on his truck a year and he doesn't beat on it at all and OME wouldn't own up to what many would call early failure.

Sounds like a bad spring. Those seem to have pretty good reputation on this site.

Most c/o's will max at 3'' fully adjusted. Unless you start getting into big money stuff. Sounds like you need to go King. If you still want a little cush to your ride play with the valving, and nitrogen pressure.

I dont have an ARB but a allpro with a big A$$ winch and 2 batteries, and my icons have handled it a hellava lot better than my OME springs did.

Told the guys at Icon that i was carrying extra weight up front and they said they would hook me up :notsure: if they did anything out of the ordinary tho

So it looks like I should go with ICON or KING. Are valving and pressure something I can do or something that I should decide on when ordering? Sounds like I need to get a hold of DSM to iron it out

DSM will talk you through some valving options. Nitrogen pressure is something that you can play with, but for sure DSM will get you dialed in at what ever request you make, and give you solid advice.

I run Icon 2.5's F/R but my front bumper is only 65lbs. Currently I'm at 190psi of nitrogen and I can say that on/off road they're smooth.

For spring rate and lift reasons I would research into King to get a fair comparison.

I've got Fox 2.5s with an ARB and it's a great combination. 2" of lift with maybe 1-1/4 Inch of thread above the collar. After one year, no sag at all. As for the 3.5" lift, you'll likely end up with a truck that rides like a fork lift.

I don't think those Eibachs can handle the weight of the ARB and winch.

My question (since I've been researching a lot about suspensions) is do you plan to use the Icon, FOX or other high price/grade coil over as they are intended to be used? Are you doing a lot of desert running? If you're not then I would save the money and get a set of 886 springs. I know you said your dad had a bad experience with OME, but it sounded like that was a fluke bad spring.

    Just my opinion

Not a lot of desert running but a majority of the roads I drive on tend to be pretty rough so I want something to smooth the ride out. And when I do go off-roading I tend to be the one flying through areas and I'd prefer something that can take a better beating. I'd rather save/spend some additional money on a more than ample set-up than spend less and end up not being happy with it.

OME is made for a stock truck, the 886's are for 200lbs more spring load. OME is O.G. in this game and you can't compare ICON's against OME; Icons are racing suspension set up as OME is for light off road. Not a professional in this game what so ever, but talking and doing research with the professionals state, it matters what you go for.

Anybody who tells you that Icon is a poor choice for an offroad vehicle doesn't know what they are talking about. All the better COs like Icon, King, Fox, etc improve both the onroad and offroad performance of these trucks dramatically. They offer the significant advantage of adjustable preload to tune things to your specific truck.
