Yea, pay a shop 20 bucks to use their spring compressor and don't risk killing or maiming yourself because you want to cut corners.

 

It worked just fine for me the six or so times I've done it.Here is a write up I did on it, taken from my build thread.

. Call me ignorant or a moron for doing it this way but it felt a lot more safer and went a lot smoother this way. See below for video made by fellow member "db".

We used a 3.5 ton floor jack to do this. I wouldn't feel comfortable doing it with anything but heavy-duty floor jack. I also don't know how well this would work with a spacer lift; I don't know if I'd be comfortable trying this way with a spacer lift.

We loosened the two cam bolts on the LCA, then removed the two bolts going into the knuckle. This causes the LCA to lower so we swung the loose LCA back up to its "normal" position and rested it on top of the floor jack which was raised, then we carefully removed the top middle nut of the shock.

We slowly and carefully lowered the floor jack which disassembled the shock assembly. Unbolted the lower shock and we were done. We didn't even need to unscrew the outer three nuts on the top plate of the shock.

When assembling the new coils we just bolted the lower shock into the LCA, lined the shock stem up with the hole in the top plate, jacked it up carefully and slowly, then put the two bolts back into the knuckle so that the pressure was there and on the floor jack (we didn't want the pressure to be solely on the nut on the stem of the shock, also if you can't get the two bolts into the knuckle, try pulling down on the UCA to get it to line up better), then screwed the top nut back on last.

I will do a write-up on this sometime in the future with pictures. Maybe even a video of it; so you can either see something go horribly wrong or go incredibly fast and easy.

Whichever way you choose to do it has its dangers. Keep that in mind and do only what you are comfortable with.

 

i'm just looking at doing different ways i'm gnna put my lift on sometime soon and probably gnna be doing it solo so just trying to look at all possible ways

 

yea i paid $125 for my buddys shop to install them dropped it off in the morning and picked it up that night way easier

 

i can do the work the myself just not sure on how to go about the strut compression\

 

It's easy. But if you're not comfy with it then don't do this method.

I installed the stock coils on stock shocks before i got rid of the last truck using the weight of the truck.

I had to do this on a Focus one time because the bolts were seized. It's a lot easier and safer to use spring compressors. Most autozones will loan them to you with their loan a tool program. They are inexpensive to buy.

No wayitssafer to use those on these coils. When I first tried using the rented spring compressors the bolts were bending because of the pressure.

Safest way to really do thisisto drop em offset a shop thathasa floor of wall mounted spring compressor. But ou can still find videos on YouTube of shops shooting springs out into the parking lot using the rinky dink autozone ones.

The method I use is smooth as hell. Know the risks involved with each method and only do what you feel safe doing,

I've never done this on a Toyota - I've always used a spring compressor. That said, this doesn't really concern me.

This is really the only way to remove/replace springs on a modified MacPherson strut vehicle. For example; FOX and SN95 Mustangs. You simply can not fit most types of spring compressors in the tight space around the spring. I've always wrapped a chain around the spring so it can only move about a foot if it were to shoot out. I've done this well over a dozen times with no close calls or accidents.

 

I did it when I installed my lift... it was easy and not a big deal at all.

 

Did it the second time I changed my coil overs. Felt MUCH safer than the auto zone spring compressors
