Bed linered my bumper!

Ya linered isn't a verb, gimme a break

Anyways, it turned out nice. The only thing is I was not going to do the plastic cap or the shoulders.

I had seen mentioned the plastic cap was clips..looked around all looked good so pulled up gently. No problem came right off.

Shoulder looked like clips too...pulled up, yep clip. Little further..SNAP. Doh!

Anyways looks like the bumper pretty much has to come off to get at the bolts that hold those badboys in. Shoulda been more careful!

Does anyone have the left plastic shoulder from their stock bumper when they upgraded etc I could buy from em? Hell I'll take both since my other one is kind of rough lookin.


Anyways I just scruffed the crap out of the chrome with some 40-grit sandpaper and sprayed on the bedliner. Here is the finished result.



Already got some dirt on it. These arent flaws in the painting, they wash right off.

Took a long while to mask the whole truck off but after that lots of even coats. If I got a run (happened once) I just rubbed it with my finger since the liner is pretty textured and the next coat totally covered it.

The rock sliders are next! They have a bit of rust on the inside/underside so its gonna take a long while to wirebrush that off then scuff everything up, then some major masking to do. Some sunny weekend day. Will post then!

Nope, just used poly and masked the truck off. Duct tape to the rescue! The rock sliders are welded to the frame, so masking there too.

That looks awesome! What type of bedliner did you use? Just to double check you left it on and just removed all the plastic right?

 

Looks good, may have to do this till i can afford a new rear bumper!

 

It is called EZ-Liner. In canada it is available at Canadian Tire.

It took 3/4 of a can to do 4 coats.

Bumper was left on the truck. I removed the trailgate real quick and used cardboard, poly, and duct tape to mask the truck off.

I tried removing the plastic, but as I said, I broke the one shoulder, and didn't want to break the other or remove the bumper, so I bedlinered the plastic shoulders.

For prep I washed the whole bumper with a damp rag etc, then used a different rag and brake cleaner to degrease. Then I took 40 grit sandpaper and scratched the crap out of the chrome.

Thanks for the info. A road trip to Canada would be a blast, but I don't think my wife will let me go, since I can by bedliner here in Texas. I might follow your lead and paint mine the way you did yours. Thx again

 

Looks great! I can help a fellow Canuck out though, I was just going to list those plastic pieces off my bumper. Both shoulder pieces are in excellent condition. Now i just gotta get them off without breaking those damn clips. PM me and we'll set something up.

For a tip I noticed the further away (to a point of course) you hold the spray can the more textured the result is. I really like how the texture turned out though. Tough looking without being totally flat.

 

Wonder if I should spray these new plastic shoulders or leave them as-is ?

 

An update on this BTW.

Almost a year later now and it looks fantastic. Unlike on my rock sliders this has held up perfectly.

Pics to follow when my truck isn't so dirty from winter grime you can actually see the bumper.

 

The bumper is pretty easy to remove, not very heavy either. 6 bolts & 2 electrical clips for the license plate lights if I recall correctly.

Do you remember how many coats you sprayed? I just sprayed my bumper and used a little over 1 can (Of the same EZ Liner). Its only been drying for 5 or 6 hours, but seems like it will chip really easy. maybe it needs more time to cure.

You have to scratch the piss out of the chrome with some low # sand paper. It should look just covered in big scratches.

If you put it on bare chrome it won't stick at all.

It gets MUCH harder after a few days as well..

I do notice some chipping on mine where the bumper meets the body (faces into the wind) probably because I don't have mudflaps.

I'll touch it up at some point though.

 

I bed lined my rear bumper as well. I removed it since it wasn't that hard and that way I could sand it with a air sander. then I used a entire can of bed liner on it. so far no real issues except some times it looks dirty since the texture tends to hold on to stuff...

 

Those plastic corners are a complete pain to remove/attach

 

i decided to use that EZ liner on the bottom section of my ATO bumper and it definitely hasn't held up through the winter. Ontario is horrible for using way to much salt on the roads so combine that with rock chips and i got spots of rust showing up. Argh, theres no winning with the road salt here. Nothing really holds up except powder coating which i'll be doing that this summer instead of rattle canning it once a year.
