I can see some hate coing from this....but

I run a mac (and like it). I have just set up dual monitors on it and i am OS X Lion.

With Lion i can switch between multiple virtual desktops. When i hook the external up, i get two desktops, but when i try to change desk tops on my laptop screen, my external switches as the same time. I want to be able to switch virtual desktops on each monitor seperateyl, got any ideas?

(and no, i'm not switching to Linux or windows, i have a lenovo x220 that I use when i have to, but i will stick with the mac)

Linux is a very good platform. I'm not saying it isn't. Hell Android is a variation of Linux. I just want to see some more of it with a good support system behind it to challenge MS in all phases. MS runs rampant with products that are sub-par compared to what is possible and companies still use it. Novel was able to do things with zen that MS is still trying to do.

How many software packages are made for linux vs Windows? It is hard to move to Linux when there aren't many software packages that work with it. Can it be done? yes, but it takes a lot more knowledge to make it happen.

I deal a lot with VMware (yes another variation of Linux) and it pisses me off to no end to hear MS talk about hyper-v. MS is the king of marketing and the will find someway to weasel there crap in the door. And while they are doing it, I'm happy to make money off of it.

Perhaps that's the key - MS is the king of marketing, and Linux doesn't market itself. It's just Linux.

Some companies have started to use it, but usually in specialized ways or behind the scenes. I think it works great at that, and should continue to do so. I don't know if it'll ever be a friendly, point-and-click server. I wouldn't want that anyways, I hate Windows servers for that very reason.

This appliance server paradigm is interesting too - we have a lot of Cisco servers for voice that are Linux servers... but we don't have root access. At all.

It is truly behind the scenes right now. If it stays that way, MS will continue to dominate a lot of areas. I like that google is starting to challenge tham.

My entire infrastructure needs to be upgraded and soon. I'm hoping by years end, i'll get the approval to get new servers. With any luck, I'll be able to get a few good servers and run VM's. right now 256GB is only a dream LOL

normally it would be crazy for me to thing about that much memory in a machine, let alone 7. I'm on contract with a company that is about 20,000 users and runs a majority of the hospitals in iowa.

just remember, don't put all your eggs in one basket.

i'm really not sure why they have a job. There isn't even a data center here for them to watch anymore.

besides, i don't think you would like their pay.

Figured I would chip in here. Been in IT for about 10 years now, started out in Tech Support, then went to Software QA, then Software Development (VB.NET/C#.NET), then a little Database (SQL/Cerner/a little Oracle), got tired of all the development stuff and decided to devote my time to a more Database area. So now I do Production Support which is basically high tier support. Mainly data fixes, root cause analysis, and deployments. Looking to move more towards being a DBA or something.

Yeah, I have always been more of a software guy as opposed to a hardware guy. Of course the computer nerd in me allows me to be able to do menial hardware tasks, but if it gets too complicated and can't find it on teh googlez, then I am done.

Thank you, thank you. I have been lurking for a while. Just never had much to contribute to the cause.
