Flip hitch for clearance

I thought for sure I read a post about this a few months ago, but now can't find it anywhere. Can the 2nd gen hitch be flipped to increase departure angle? I though I saw the mod where the hitch was coming out where the liscense plate used to be.

 

You can't flip the hitch over without cutting it up and re-welding. What you saw was probably a custom made high clearance receiver.

 

Get an aftermarket rear bumper. I've seen a couple of nice high clearance ones that hide the hitch receiver behind the license plate.

 

any of you know the tow rating for the aftermarket hide-away hitches?? my 2012 taco has the towing package and i dont want to lose any towing capabilities..

 

The custom made high clearance bumpers with a built in receiver aren't tested and given the same ratings as an aftermarket branded receiver or the OEM receiver. They don't pay to go through all the testing and inspections so they can't put a load rating on their receivers. If you find a company that sells them commercially, you might find a load rating but the fabricators on this site don't have them.

That being said, they're pretty stout, reinforced well and most of them are put through quite a bit of abuse. Towing at the OEM rated max would carry a little bit of personal risk (or trust in the fabricator).

thanks for the info.. i dont plan on towing max with my taco, but i dont want to limit myself either on something that i had to pay extra for

 

Your best bet is to ask the fabricators themselves. See what people have reported as towing with their bumpers, and what the fabricator would recommend safely.

 

You'd be able to use your receiver. Most of the fabricators have their receivers very much overbuilt for recoveries and towing. I just wanted to make sure you realized there is no stamped rating like you'd get with a standard class 3 or 4 receiver. Ouyin is correct though, talk to the fabricator when you place your order.
