    Hi,
I'm a brand new member and have a big problem.

just bought a used 97 taco. On the way home from the seller the pulley on one of the camshaft launched itself half way through the timing belt cover.

So rather then piss and moan about it or the seller I would rather focus on fixing it.
Yes the truck had a clean carfax and passed my OBD reader, had the timing belt and w/pump replaced and was regularly serviced @ a dealer.
It has 96 thousand miles and was an estate sale.
    So the questions.

    Anyone ever experience this ?

Is this motor (3.4) a Non interfering?

    Replace heads to repair?

    Replace motor?

    Buy a Ford? :)
Thanks in advance for any reply!

Could be as simple as the cam pulley bolt failing and separating from the camshaft.

Oh shit dude, the pulley set screw cam loose and it came of the cam shaft. You will have to re-clock the cam, and retighten the set screw, as long as none of the valves got hurt. Not sure if the 3.4 is non-interfering or not.

Not to my knowlege (did search)

    Yes, its non interfering

that, and likely cam shaft, and gearing, and casing

if no major internal damage was done, no.

    fuck no

Here's what it looks like in back of the cover:

I recommend going to the dealer. Find out when was the last time the owner had the timing belt changed. Supposed to be done ever 90k

The thing is, the cam pulley bolt should not be touched when changing the timing belt.

    Hmm.
I havent got it home yet.
So I will get it torn apart and have a look asap and post an update.
From what I understand its the engine pulley that is removed in a timing belt RnR.
Any how thanks for the helpful and super speedy replies!

They might have replaced the cam seals while they were in there. Its very common.

The guy that worked on it last didn't tighten the bolt that holds the pulley on and it fell off. You should be able to get a new bolt and maybe new pulley. Worst case scenario is it needs a new cam due to messed up threads.

Yeah, just thought about that. Either the bolt loosened or it was overtorqued and broke off.

Got it home yesterday and proceeded to take it apart.

The thing that caught my attention was the damage to the cam pulley bolt, looks like a bit of force was used on it.

I guess its on to removing the heads now.

    wow, thats nuts.

When i rebuilt my head it was a biatch and a half to get the intake cam sprocket(chain driven) bolt off.

extra care definitely needs to be taken with that bolt.

its hard to tell but it looks like you need a new head..? I don't know anything about the 3.4 but i thought non interference meant if a belt breaks you DON'T need to open up the heads...?

in this particular scenario i would no doubt.

but i was talking about just a standard belt break with the 3.4. You shouldn't in theory have to worry about the valves contacting anything right?

I ask because a good buddy is going on 200k on his factory belt and he's going to run it till it breaks because of the "NON-INTERFERING" aspect. I'm trying to do anything i can to get him to change it before hand so i need ammo.

He'll be stranded and have to pay for a tow truck when it breaks.

As for doing a timing belt on the side of the road, no thanks!

Convince your buddy to do a preemptive strike.

Ya new heads at least but I won't order them till i get a look inside.
I'm thinking about a "salvaged" motor replacement.

I'm an old guy, retired so this will be my last truck.
Wrenching on it keep me out of the bars.
    Heads + gasket set = $800
    Salvaged complete motor = $1400

got a lot of the stuff off the motor today and now am waiting on a gear puller.

I live about 30 miles from the nearest parts store and its an over priced NAPA run by an ass so 99% of the stuff will come via the web.

This is my real hobby, finding gold with a metal detector
