Air in brake lines. Bkeeding doesnt fix.

07 Tacoma prerunner, 2.7l.

After installing extended brake lines, front and rear. Have bled the brakes 4 times. Sounds like air in the master cylinder.

Can't seem to get a pedel.

Help me out guys. I'm supposed to go on a 200 mile trip tomorrow.

 

There has to be a hole in the system somewhere. Remove the extended brake line to diagnose if that is the problem. Start simple.. then we'll go to the next step.

 

exactly what he said. you have a hole somewhere or the new brake lines arent making a good seal. put the old ones back on and try to bleed them. may have to send the new brake lines back and get longer rubber lines to hold you til then.

Same problem after stretching the old brake lines back on there. Bled them again and got a good bit of air out, but still no pedal.

The MC is making a weird vibrating, fast gurgling sound when you step on the brake fast.

After some more research, i found this.

I'm going to give this a shot in the morning. With the sounds the MC is making, i believe the air in in the MC.

Is your brake fluid dirty? I had an old Chevelle that I bled the brakes on and actually washed out some crap from the master cylinder and one wheel cylinder. The crap was apparently sealing up the worn out rubber seals inside the cylinders. The fluid was very dirty before we started working on the car.

I haven't bled the brakes on my Tacoma yet, but I know some new vehicles require that the ABS pump be cycled with a scan tool to get all of the air out of the system.

 

The fluid was clean. I'll have to look into the scan tool if bleeding the MC doesn't do it for me. Thanks for the info!

 

If you got air in the master cylinder there's nothing you can do you have to take it to a shop

you need to bleed the master. Do you have abs? you may require a special tool(similar to a MODIS scanner) to open valves internally on the abs system. *only ran into this on a ford, ONCE after replacing a master cylinder*

 

ok yall im a previous toyota tech. on the master cylinder there are to lines. pump it up hold pedal to the floor crack one line loose at at time until no air thats how u bleed the master cylinder.

also let me ask how are you bleeding the system not saying your doin it wrong but want to know so i can help

 

I'm pretty sure all second gen taco's have abs. I'm truly hoping that the master bleed that i posted above will do the trick. If it comes to requiring a special electronic device to make it work, it'll be headed to the shop.

 

you'll be fine. Google the bleeding procedure for the brakes. Sometimes theres a certain sequence you have to do it in

 

I like your way of bleeding the master, more then the way i posted above. Seems that would keep air out of the system better.

I've been bleeding brakes on different vehicles for 20 years. I always start on the wheel furthest from the master, three pumps and hold, release valve and tighten. Continue until there is straight fluid coming out. Continue to the next furthest wheel from the master. Repeat.

 

Yup that's the trick. There is a recall on the Lexus I use to do on the master cylinder an that's all I would do is pump three hold it an have someone break one line loose on the master cylinder close it until the one line is air free then move to the second. If this doesn't work for you the only other way is scan tool but I believe alot of brake fluid an the way u do an the way I just said ull b fine 

 

Okay, it's fixed!!


I ended up bleeding the MC, using the procedure below.

This gave me a bit more pedal, but still not right. After pulling my hair out for a while, i decided to just run through all 4 bottles of brake fluid i bought to be sure that i have cycled new fluid through the entire line system.

Having someone sit in the truck and press the pedal over and over, i went listening for any bubble noise. The MC was good. The calipers and drums wern't making any noise. Connections were tight and there was no leaks.

I did eventually find a bubbling sound. It was in this little aluminum box that had all the brake lines running into it. Apparently, when i replaced the brake lines, air got up into the lines and kept floating up until it hit the top, which happen to be this aluminum box on the passenger side under the hood.


Anyway, this box doesn't have a bleeder valve. The only thing i could think of was to keep bleeding wheels until the bubbles were pushed out of the valves. It took about 3 bottles of brake fluid to eventually push the bubbles out.

Now i have a better pedal then i did originally! What a relief.

I had a similar issue and took it to a shop who did a power bleed. Worked for me, but i probly had the same issue you had. Glad to hear you got it fixed.

 

I had the same problem as well. I believe that "aluminum box" is part of the ABS. I made the mistake of turning my key to the "on" position to unlock the steering wheel to turn the front wheels for more room while installing the lines. That might've cycled the valves in the ABS block and let air in.

Anyways my fix was to have it pressure bled at a shop :-( Glad you got it resolved. Power bleeding with a scan tool is expensive.
