tranny flush.....

What do you guys think about a tranny flush and filter? i just bought a 2001 4dr tacoma 4x4 w/ 120,000. Carrier bearing is shot and i am noticing some hard shifting. is it all tranny or could it be from carrier bearing?

 

the hard shifting is due to a clogged filter more than likely. drain the fluid and drop the pan...................then remove and clean the filter with brake cleaner..............you can reuse it too.....all it really is, is a metal screen mesh type filter. replace the carrier bearing too though....that will help with any vibrations from the drive line that you may have.

depending on how long its been since the tranny was serviced, im putting my money on it being a clogged filter.

keeping the fluid and filter changed when needed........and that just depends on your driving style and if you tow alot, but every 20 to 30k will/should keep the tranny in good shape.

 

im not trying to be a dick, but you have the same 2 people answering you in both threads..lol

and you can drop the trans pan and clean the filter, and put the used oil back in..shouldnt have any problems there. Just watch out for metal shavings since you said it shifted hard

 

i'd go ahead and put in 5 new quarts of oil, after the clean filter and pan go back in. he's still gonna have about 10 or so quarts of used oil in there, so it shouldnt hurt. if the filter does the trick for the shifting.......you should be able to do a flush without it hurting anything.

You just bought the truck with 120,000 miles on it?

I'd personally get it fully flushed, have filter changed, new fluids...etc. You have no idea when (or if) it was ever flushed/serviced ever.
