Without arguing the price, or value of such a wheelset, you very definitely notice the higher engagement hubs, even trail riding. There is a nice improvement going from 24pt to 36pt, and then higher.

Hey is Jamis a decent brand. I'm getting back into mountain biking and am going to buy an entry lvl bike around $400-500. Reason i ask about Jamis is because there is a new local shop that, that is all they have. If i buy a bike from him he also does 6months of service for free.

Jamis isn't a bad brand at all. Of course, you really want something that fits and that you want to ride.

$400-$500 won't buy anything but weight, lots of heavy weight. As Gary Fisher is oft quoted: Light, Strong, Cheap... Pick any two. I would take that money and buy a decent used bike, lots of guys buy good equipment then it sits in the garage. You'll find a$1,200 new bike for $500 easily.

Plus, it won't break,it will ride much nicer, less will go wrong with it.

^ Nothing wrong with a good used bike to start out with, you can save some $.

Weight wise, Jamis makes some beautiful aluminum frames, check out their welds up close, very nice. For the beginner, I wouldn't be concerned about weight too much, fit is best. If you start out with a good aluminum frame, you can up grade original components as you go along, or break them in my case.

oh.. get a geometry that suits your style of riding. Steeper head tube angle is more agile, but more twitchy bombing down hill.

Jamis have a bunch of low priced bikes that aren't bad deals. Lower end components hung on aluminum hard-tail frames. All are a grand or less all good starter bikes.

You won't be hucking them off jumps all day and it's kind of heavy (weighs as much as my Nomad) but they're good value.

Jamis makes good, well priced bikes. The wife upgraded from her Jamis to a Cannondale a couple of years ago. Jamis ALWAYS makes my short list when I'm looking for a new bike.

Yea im talking to a couple of guys about used bikes.Like you said sometimes you can get good deals on great bikes.

As far as the right sized bike goes, that was one of the first thing the bike shop owner talked about when i was looking at bikes. Even the lower end bikes are really light compared to a department store bikes lol.

Thanks for the reply guys. :)

dont buy it from the store. sure you get some bonuses, but just go to jensonusa.com and look for some $400 bikes. You will be able to buy a brand new bike from a few years ago for cheap instead of only being able to buy this years model at full price. and for the right size, just go to stores and figure out what fits you, then buy online

    No. Don't do this.

Buying at a local shop gets you a bike that's assembled properly and it gets you some help maintaining it for a while. You have a place to go if you need help and you may also get a parts discount if you feel like upgrading stuff or picking up other gear.

If you do anything, see if the shop will price match.

Buy it on-line and you put it together and deal with any adjustment that necessary. Also, if you buy on-line, don't expect help when it comes to warranty work (should you need it). The local guy will just tell you to take it back where you bought it :D

I'm not saying don't buy on-line. If you do, do your own research and don't waste the local guy's time (and money).

Oh i do all my own work haha  but thats why i said JensonUSA because they completely assemble it before shipping except for putting the wheels on... and if you live in SoCal, they have a shop relatively nearby and they deliver it completely assembled

All of my local shops are super good to me... I like going to them bc they set up the bike the way it should be and they make it a perfect fit. They know all the trails so the set the bike up accordingly.

This is another reason I would buy from the local bike shop. Plus since this would be my first real bike it would be nice to have that 6months of maintenance for free. Yea and i would not want to risk putting it together and finding out i did it wrong while im in the middle of nowhere. :)

I am going to put a lot of effort this spring and summer to ride more especially with the local bike shop. They actually have rides a couple times a week
