Redline Tailgate EZ Down for 2012

Does anyone have information about using this-http://www.redlinetuning.com/products_ezdown.html on a 2012 short bed? I sent an email but never received a reply. It says 05-10, so I am not sure if there is a difference.

Piece of crap, cable binds always.

 

Tacoma tailgate are pretty darn light.

 

If you have a hand available to unlatch it, certainly you can lower the tailgate without too much trouble?

 

Yeah its not difficult for me. Just thought it would be a trick little mod. But if they are shitty, then I will skip it.

I just completed mine on my 12 shortbed. It is true the cable binds, but installing a zip strip to guide the cable over to one side prevents that from happening. I noticed that it feels sticky when it is opening and closing, the plastic that is on the tailgate seems to rub on the strut. I did a little shaving of the plastic and painted it so you can't even tell. Now it opens and closes like a frickin champ. I absolutely love it. I was tired of hearing it slam down when I opened it with one hand. For the price of $50 dollars I think this is a great mod. What's a shame is that Toyota should have this standard on all there tailgates.

 

Did they change the mounting bracket design recently? The tailgate hinge torx screws on '09+ beds were tack-welded in place.

Installed mine yesterday, got it for only $31 at my local auto parts store (O'Reilly Auto Parts). Easy install if you have the correct bits but true the cables rub every time. I thought maybe just letting the cable sit on the outer side so it won't rub would help mold it in place would help but it doesn't work as I though it would. Tailgate sticks now and its eating at my cable every time I close it. Considering returning this thing, that or removing the cable...what do you guys think?

 

The first time my wife let my tailgate slam I bought one to protect the camera in there. They kink the cable, but I doubt it'll ever cause a problem. I can't see ever having to replace it. Not because of that anyway, it'll rust out long before the kink ever becomes a problem. They work, just not absolutely perfectly.

 

Mine was like that too. I lived it with it and over time it worked itself out a little. I'll post pics in an hour or two when I get out of work. You can see what it looks like after 3+ years. It's not bad. Not IMO anyway. You're dead on with the cable to the side theory if I'm picturing it right, it just takes time being in that position for it to begin to take.

 

I don't know about that.

I'd much rather throw money away on a mod on my truck that may work for some time just to learn and have an excuse to work on my truck.

Vs.

Spending money to have a chick give me blue balls then go home and stare at my truck that I could be working on with a raging boner.

I will never understand peoples obsessions with strip clubs.

 

This has been on my truck since late '08. The kink has not chewed thru the plastic either, so I doubt it's really hurting the cable inside. Hope this helps.

 

Those don't look too bad. My cable ends are what really worry me, they are rubbing on bedliner. Maybe after a few good works it'll set itself in. Good pics.

 

I shoulda done more research. I was ordering the hood struts and threw these in the cart too. Garbage. Tailgate is harder to open now cuz it binds.

Got a fast response from Brian- I guess they just distribute the tailgate strut. The hood lifts they make. I don't put anything heavy on the tailgate so I'm going to try it without the
cable on the driver side.

 

Cable gone, but the edge of the composite piece on the tailgate still catches the strut. Time for a little grinding.

 

Went through the whole installation until the last part of unscrewing the torx screw and saw that its welded to the gate on my 2013. Are there any other alternatives to the ez down?
