It's a 5-lugger with a four speed auto. That rear end is taller than 4WD models and the transmission's ratios aren't for sporty fun.

The 5spd 6-lugger 2.7 regular cab really scoots (for a four banger truck) with the stock tire size.

    This is my dream vehicle^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I would have to agree that the older model trucks were built much better. My favorite truck was my $7,000 out the door 1989 4cyl bone stock 5sp truck.(loved that 22re engine) That little truck was a tank. I kind of regret getting rid of my 2000 pre-runner but I wanted more room.

With the stock 4.10 gears you are about the same effective geared as the OP. Clearly the manual makes a big difference vs automatic in controlling rpm and shift points to maintain decent acceleration and feeling of power.

Two things are at play here. First, if the tires are larger diameter, then you just dropped your drive ratio.

Second, the extra weight of a truck tire vs. a passenger tire is unsprung, rotating mass. It takes more energy to spin up that higher mass, and it's worse because it's concentrated in the tread (way out at the outer limit of the tire). That energy used to spin up the tire is energy not available to accelerate the truck forward.

Old Toyota;s 1980's models where definately built better, reason..Made in Japan not North America. They had no relationships with the so called Big 3.:)

This is a very good explanation regarding tire changes.
To expand on #2. The increase in diameter affects the rotational energy more than the increase in mass. Both increases (mass and radius) negatively affect the rotational moment of inertia.

I too think the older trucks are much better. I had an 84 4runner that lasted forever (440,000+ Km's) and other then the body rusting I don't recall doing anything other then regular maintenance.

I've had a 96 Tacoma and now a 2008 Tacoma which are much more powerful and comfortable to drive, but not as reliable. I still think they are better built then the competition though.

My 2010 prerunner would scoot pretty well, but it was a 5-speed with the prerunner gearing, which gave it a decided advantage over a 5-lug auto trans.
