Why is the fan on my first gen so loud?

Why is the fan on my tacoma so loud? Its louder than i have ever heard on any tacoma in any video ive seen on youtube. Could this be a problem? How could it be solved? Is there an auxiliary fan on 1st gens to keep them cool? I will try to get video up tomarrow or sometime. Does anyone else have this problem?

 

My clutch fan sounds like a semi truck fan at times... Idk why, but it's loud at times.

 

Here is a picture from where it sounds like the noise is coming from. Just the regular old fan after the radiator.

Where is the clutch fan located and is this a sign that my clutch could be going out?

Mine is loud all the time. It is annoying and its all i hear when i rev the engine.

 

Loud as in air movement? Or loud as in a bearing that is defective...?

 

Defiantly loud as in air movement. It is super loud. Doesnt sound like a bearing or anything being defective like that. Just moving tons of air through the fan is what it sounds like.

 

So how should it be to spin. Should it be locked? Should it take a lot of effort to spin? Should it spin freely? Which one is it? I'm just confused.

 

so if it is bad if its locked up or freely spinning what is it supposed to be? i cant move mine with my hand

Well i'm almost 16 and have a 1966 c10. So basically yes. This is only my second truck. But from listening to the exhaust vids and drive by's it seems that my truck doesn't fit in with the others in terms of sound. It sounds like it is sucking for air when ever the engine is revved.

 

The fan is belt-driven, so higher revs - higher fan speed. Once the truck gets up to to speed, the fan clutch disengages and the fan ceases to be driven.

 

Sucking for air? maybe you need to change airfilter

 

I am running stock exhaust and it still does it at normal operating temperature. I never would rev my engine while cold. Could you please explain to me what HVAC controls are. The truck in the video doesnt sound like the fan noise is nearly as bad as what my truck sounds like. Hopefully i can get a vid up tomarrow. thanks for the help though

 

I heard it at 2:00 in the video and my truck sounds the same way. But once i am well warmed up and driving the fan doesn't seem to shut off as you mention above. Is this because i had the heat running. I tried it without HVAC controls on and the fan was still on and didn't turn off for the duration of the drive. Maybe there is a bad sensor or something that is causing the fan to stay on during my drives. I'm not sure but could that be a possibility.

 

I guess i will just have to get used to it. Im looking into a magnaflow muffler so that could help. And louder tunes can also solve the problem. Haha. Thanks a lot for your help.

 

it shouldnt be really hard to turn and it shouldnt spin freely. the fan has a clutch on it that makes it is a sense "disconnect" from its shaft on start up so the engine reaches operation temp faster and then once it gets up to temp the clutch kicks back in and it spins the same speed as the shaft driving it. mechanical fans are always kinda noisy so unless its making a really unusual sound then its fine

 

Both my trucks make the loud ROAR when you start them up. I know exactly what you're talking about. The 1998 that I sold to my mom takes about a minute for the fan to turn off, my 2000 takes about 45 seconds. If yours is on all the time, you definitley have something wrong that you need to check into.
