New 2012

so I just got my tacoma like 2 weeks ago, and I gotta ask, whats up with the 50lb hood?

It's gotta weigh more than the whole rear end......I think I'm loosing 3mpg just by dragging that thing around town...

any ideas? Drill holes in it?

They make a model hood with a skewp. The skewp adds 42 horsepower, therefore, counteracting the weight of it. You need a skewp.

Non skewped hood on a 4 cylinder, equal to riding a bike with flat tires and bricks in a basket.


On a more serious note, don't drill holes. It's a hood on a truck. If you have a problem with it:

I appologize if the "hole drilling" comment was a bit of a curve ball for some of you. I assure you I would not drill holes. I do apreciate the comic responses though. I did like the 70's hood.

This is in fact a serious thread. I was genuinely surprised by the weight of the hood when I opened it. And while I realize "this is a truck," a truck doesn't mean it has to be unecessarly heavy. Especially a "light" truck, that is intended to be economical and functional.

While the carbon fiber is a bit extreme in cost for the simple application of weight reduction it would justify to do the break down to find the break even point. Especially through out the life of the truck which for this little tacomas can be quite long I believe.

Any follow-ups and suggestions, including flames, are always welcomed.

Switching to a carbon fiber hood will cost hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars...all to save ~30 lbs. That weight reduction is almost 100% negligible when calculating fuel economy. Even if you save .1 MPG (which you won't), do the math and see how long that takes to recoup the cost of the hood.

 

Imagine what a "piece of tinfoil" ie light weight hood, would do in the event of a front end collision. That piece of steel will take a lot more force to damage.

 

speed holes are always cool.
