You a Whaler? I was in the LAST Whale squadron (VAQ-33) when we retired them in 1991. They even rolled Heinemann in for that one...HE was shocked they were still flying!

twizter, they just got the last flying whale in at the National Naval Aviation Museum in Pcola this past fall. It is configured as an EA-3D. Beautiful air plane. If you get a chance stop over there and see the museum.

I was in for 4 years. Went through 6-month Fleet Sonar School in Key West in '59. I was in sonar on a couple minesweepers out of Little Creek, VA.
Was on Cuban Blockade chasing and photo'ing Russkie freighters running through the Windward Passage. Discharged in Jan of '63.

'Cept for seasickness I enjoyed it.

yeah, they flew it in and we defueled it at the museum. It took me over a month of chasing fuel leaks where they didn't bleed the lines in the wings and engines. Think I got about 5 gallons of JP-5 out of her. Funny story is that is the second time I had interaction with a whale. the first time was on my first class midshipmen cruise when I helped to lift one off of the USS Wasp and onto a barge. It was the one that had stood as a static display at Rota.

I was a reduction in force, never got past academics. passed but did not meet the average of of those in the classes before me (94 i think was the magic average). Three others got dropped as well.
