Something on my glass that won't come off

It looks as if the lower part of my windshield is fogged up, but I can't wipe it or clean it off. Ive soaked both sides of the glass with windex to no avail. My truck was at a body shop a couple weeks ago, so I think this "dirt" is from them. Any advice on some super strong cleaner to remove this stuff?

 

Use a new single edge razor blade.

 

It might be overspray. What does it feel like? Gritty or smooth?

I agree; a blade is a good thing to try.

 

goo gone and a rag / follow up with some alcohol or windex

 

Also Steel wool is great for removing overspray from glass and will not scratch your glass.

 

I would be careful on the Windshield, there is a film on each side of the glass on the windshield that keeps it from breaking into a million pieces in an accident. I actually scratched mine on the outside alittle wiping off dried birdshit with a wet rag believe it or not. I would actually be hesitant to use steel wool. I would try a mild paint thinner because it sounds like over spray. The razor blade would work too as long as its a flat surface and be very careful not to dig into it. Good luck, with whatever you use.

 

I hate hearing this there is nothing wrong with using steal wool on automotive glass. Car detailers and body shops use it all day every day. It is one of the best ways to clean hard water spots off of glass and works great on over spray. Of course don't use it in the inside of your Windows if they are rented.

 

I agree with the rest of the glass, I would just not trust it on the windshield. I figure if I scratched it as easily as I did, then I would be hesitant. But by all means, use it on your windshield.

 

The film (pvb) is between the two layers of glass not outside.

 

You will be fine, its tempered and laminated and damn hard to shatter.

I'm no glass genius, but it scratched pretty easy. And my bad, always thought film was on the outside of the glass. Figured thats why it scratched so easily.

 

Tempered is only on the sides and back of your car. Tempered isn't generally used in laminated applications.

I'll try some fine steel wool today, if it doesn't work I'll take it back to the body shop. They did paint my driver doors and bed side, I assumed they would tape up the windows, but maybe not. I really don't want to take it back to this shop again though, im pretty sure they dropped a tool and dented my hood, but that is impossible to prove, and I already had to take it back once so they could reapply a decal.

Should I apply any type of cleaner or lubricant prior to going at it with the steel wool? It is on the windshield and back windows only.

 

I would spray it with Windex or any other window cleaner. And just keep in mind you don't need to use any elbow grease at all just press hard enough that you can feel the surface of the glass with your fingertips as you slide across the surface once the over spray is gone it should glide smoothly accross the glass.

 

Looks like the steel wool did the trick, I'll double check tonight because it's actually easier to see at night, but I can't find any trace of it! 000 extra fine steel wool was the type I used and it came right up with light to moderate pressure and turned it all into a white powder that I was able to wipe right up. So thank you guys!

Now I do have some very stubborn water spots on the passenger side windows and door panels from a rogue sprinkler that the steel wool did not work on. Any suggestions for that?

 

lacquer thinner!!!!!! except not really. use an adhesive remover and a razor blade

 

my windshield got scratched from the brillo pad side on a sponge... so yea i for one wont be using anything like that anymore. but hey to each their own. ive used a straight razor with good results before. just my .02

 

If you bought it used the previous owner may have done like me and put a layer of that ceramic insulator stuff on it and scratched that, but the previous posters are correct the film is in between the glass. I have a scratch on my back window that was there when I bought the truck though so I kind of know what you're talking about.
