I have been considering getting a gas tank skid made for my 05 dbl cab because I have no factory skid and I have noticed how exposed the tank is. I have only noticed people getting gas stolen but no real stories of trail damage causing leaks.

It's my understanding that the gas tanks have an outer shell that doesn't hold gas and an inner shell that does so even if you do hit your tank it should be fine unless you hit it hard.

I have many gouges from small sticks and trees. Never a puncture. My gas tank skid has been sitting waiting to get painted for months. One day maybe Ill put it on when I get the OR straps.

Do you think if I jumped my truck into a crowd of Hippies it would puncture?

I can't believe that I'm currently the ONLY one to answer "Yes...and it LEAKED". I was wheeling when I ran over a long piece of 2" angle iron. It punctured the tank good.
Gas poured out. Pic below of my damage, after removing the tank. Grey stuff is attempt at patching. You can see the gouge marks made by the steel, right before it crumpled, and then ruptured, the tank.

Not a good day. I had just filled up...so I was able to haul groceries back to town...about 12 mi. before I was out of gas.

Like jandrews and PSU taco85, I'll be putting on ATO's gas tank skid for protection. Already got quite a few scratches and gouges on my gas tank so i'm due for one.

Or you could maybe lodge a 6ft. stick up in there somewhere...I've heard they occasionally make their way into weird places...
