Would I need spacers?

I have a 2006 sport and am looking at upgrading rims. I know the stock rims are 17x7.5 but I am looking at a set of Moto Metals that are 17x9. The stock backspacing is 5.5 and the new ones would be 4.5. I am just trying to figure if these would fit without spacers (I know I would have to do some trimming to keep from rubbing)?

I searched for it but couldn't seem to find the answers I was looking for... and since I am deployed until next week and don't want to lose the deal on the rims, I figured I would ask here

You didn't note the tire size, which is the most important part, but generally speaking you would not need spacers for those rims. It would make the rubbing worse by pushing the wheels out too far.

 

I was trying to figure out what size (width) I would use. I would stay at the stock 265 until I got a lift. Since they are 1 1/2 in wider I know I couldn't use the stock tires I have on now.

 

The tire manufacturers website will list the approved rim widths for each of their tire sizes. Man 265's are not approved for use on 9" wide rims.

 

Damn... I guess I will have to get my lift first. Or black out the old sport rims...

 

or buy some 8" wide aftermarket wheels

 

I try my best not to undermine KPT as he is the TW wheel/tire King , and I am only the Queen, BUT...I have to disagree here. I can't tell you how many times I have seen, and personally mounted myself, 265's on 9" and even 10" wheels, that were only "approved" for 8" wheels. I've even mounted 245's on 9" wheels, and though it looked totally stupid, it worked fine.

Bottom line is, in the real world, any 265 from any manufacturer will work fine on a 9" wheel, so I wouldn't let their approval force you into an 8" wheel if a 9" is what you really want.

 

I never said they wouldn't work, I said they are not approved by the manufacturer for the rims. I chose my words very carefully.

You are right that the odds of a problem are very low, but I've provided the facts and now the risk/reward decision is off of my shoulders. :thumbsups:

Thanks guys, I appreciate it. Maybe I should take a break from work and think about while I am posting. Maybe I should ask better what size tire would work best on them... and keep minimal rubbing. I plan on doing the lift in the next year... more money = more truck parts!

 

I would do the lift before the wheels and tires. That way you won't have to try to find wheels/tires that will work for stock suspension now just to buy bigger tires later.

But like Brett said if you are willing to run the 265 on the 9" wide rim then you can get a 17x9 with 4.5" BS, and that will require very little trimming if any on stock suspension, and allow you to run a 285 width 33" with a 3" lift and some trimming later.

 

Thanks, I appreciate it. I have been driving around in my '06 for too long without doing anything. Then again, she only has 45k miles on it since I am deployed all the time. Would I be able to run the 33"s with just a leveling kit?

 

I would not recommend a leveling kit or any type of lift that has the word "spacer" in it.

You can run the 33's with 2.5-3" of lift if you are willing to trim fender well plastic and possibly chop your cab mounts.
