anyone know where you can buy the 501 resistors? Mine one end broke off completely when It stopped working. I opened it up and there is now fixing it now.. so anyone know where I can find these?

Thanks for all of the help everyone! This forum is a real lifesaver!

Read some of the posts in this thread. Radio Shack is mentioned in approximately 34 of them. Buy a 1/4 watt 51 or 47 ohm resistor from there.

even though its not a surface mount?

Look back through the posts and you will find exact instructions on using the Radio Shack resistor. SMD's are used nowadays to save weight and cost, the old style resistor with leads is the same thing, electronically.

If only 1 of my 501 resistors came off can I replace just one with the 1/4 watt resistors??

Here is the response that I got:

thats not what I was asking. What I was asking is if one of the 501 resistors are bad/coming off the board can I use just one of these 47 ohm 1/2 watt resistors and still leave the other 501 on the circuit board?

Actually it is not a 510 ohm resistor.

SMD (surface mount) resistors are noted in the first 2 digits as a value, and the last one is

    x10^(last digit)

So 510 would be 51x(10^0) or 51 ohms.

Assuming there is 12 volts running thru that resistor for current calculation would be a big mistake as well as, depending on the circuit, there could be a ton of different voltages running thru it. Maybe even diff voltages at different temps or compass directions.

It is not a very high power resistor though. which you can tell from looking at it.

If you ordered a 51 ohm half watt resistor you'd be safe enough.

Mine are 501's and there are no local shops in my area..Id have to go online but regardless If I can fix it with a resistor like everyone else has then thats what I want to do

Wow, lots of activity on this thread!

@sgtfluffy16 / Corey: yes, you can just replace the missing resistor...there is no technical reason not to. But...guess what is going to happen to the other original 510 surface mount resistor. It is going to separate and fail; probably sooner rather than later. Why not replace both while you have everything open and apart...

Having said that, a note to everyone: be careful removing the old resistors...you can tear off the copper mounting pads if you apply too much force. Use a pair of forceps or small needlenose, and gently pull while desoldering. Really dig in with the iron because the RoHS solder is a little more difficult to melt (higher temp) plus everything is oxidized. If you do end up tearing off a pad, well....you are probably going to need me to fix it. Don't try to do anything else, just send it in...otherwise you risk ruining the board. I can deal with one missing pad, but more than that is bad news.

Also, as stated above a surface mount resistor marked '510' is 51 ohms, not 510. Think of the '0' as representing the number of 0's to apply at the end of the first two values. In other words, 51 with no 0's at the end means 51. A resistor marked 511 would be 510 ohms. Not exactly intuitive, I know...but it makes sense once you realize how it works.

Slow down and read the posts, you're just confusing yourself unnecessarily. In both of our cases only one of the 510's have fallen off and we've both found a 47 ohm resistor to replace it with. The only difference between what you're asking and what I asked and then told you is that you have a 1/2 watt resistor and I used a 1/4 watt. Both are acceptable according to the experts in this thread. Here is my original question:

Add me to another console failure - after 5 years (43,000 miles).

It'd been intermittent for about 2 weeks. Work one time...not the next. I knew this failure existed, was only a matter of time.

Found this thread and was somewhat frustrated by the 58 pages of posts!!

I gave the board assembly to my husband for inspection. He does circuit boards for a living...... We needed a magnifying glass to see anything. We didn't see any 'break' in the soldier joints but he said the joints looked piss poor and found some other weird 'irregularities' - said this must have been a LOW bidder.

He actually soldered all 5 of the components and a few others while he was as it. So, it's working now..hopefully, it'll just continue to work (and not intermittently).
