Any fellow survivalists utilize their truck?

LOVE this thread! Nothing's happened in my city for 300 years, but the area is a prime candidate for a big earthquake, and my apartment would likely be structurally unsound (if it even stayed standing), so I try to keep some basic supplies in my truck. Nothing as thorough as some of you guys though.

- Maglite with spare batteries
- Couple knives
- Bungee cords and ratchet straps
- Basic tool kit with wrenches and screwdrivers
- Matches and lighters
- My water bottle is usually full
- One of those woven Mexican blankets
- Simple first aid kit
- Flask of whiskey (can double as an antiseptic)
- Maps
- Air pump
- Power inverter
- iPhone charger
- Chains (especially in winter)
- Bible

In a few weeks I'm buying a soft-topper so I'll always have someplace dry to sleep (ok, so I'm buying it for camping/fishing, but it will be good to have if needed). I'd like to buy a pelican case to put together a more thorough kit that can be locked up with better medical supplies, non-perishable food supplies, and water.

When I'm on the highway, I always carry my -20 degree sleeping bag, and a thermos full of hot water or coffee.

If something were to happen when I'm at home, I can grab the sleeping bag, thermos, and my Yeti cooler (lockable, and it keeps ice for ages) on my way out the door.

If you are looking for NEW pelican cases, check 4lessdepot.com I used to buy them for the military, and 4less has the best prices. Better than buying them from the government vendor. They also carry all kinds of useful stuff. Flashlights, you name it. I have been picking up used cases from Craigslist. Got three big ones for $40 each a while back. They don't have any foam, but I don't need it.

 

They made a 30 mag, and a 75 round drum for the saiga 12. I have a Benelli, but I acquired it before the Saiga was imported.

 

Darth, thanks for that tip! I've been looking around, and they're just so expensive. I wouldn't mind a couple for my camping gear too, if the price is right. Never even thought of buying them used. Definitely checking out 4less too.

 

i actually just bought the saiga .223. i did some research, since its made in russia it chambers and fires the nato .556 round. its just labeled .223 for sales over here. i'm going to buy one of the conversion kits for it (ak style stock and trigger, etc..)

 

OK, since this is more of a general survival/sustainability thread, let me ask you this: is there still a reason to buy a Coleman propane lantern? My scoutmaster had one when I was a kid and I spent hours in camp hanging out in the light of one. You can produce an incredible amount of light for 8 to 10 hours on one cylinder which you can get for around $2. They're reliable and would be a great main light source to have around in an extended blackout or for camping. Negatives are that propane is obviously flammable, and they have glass globes that could break. I know there are LED lanterns out now but I can't imagine that they can come close to the output of a serious 2-burner Coleman.

Propane lanterns are great. We used them all the time when inwas a kid camping and fishing. I recently picked up a hurricane lantern that uses oil and a wick. The thing I don't like about the propane is that they need those little mesh bulbs. A hurricane lantern only needs a wick. You can make a wick out of damn near anything. It was less than 10 bucks for a gallon of fuel and the lantern

 

Good point - I have a kerosene lamp tucked away for indoor use. It's antique ruby glass though, and wouldn't work well in a camping situation. You're right about the mantels - they're a consumable just like the propane. One good thing is that they're clip-on now...I remember my scoutmaster having all kinds of trouble trying to tie them on when one would burn up.

 

Haha yea I remember watching my dad fumble around with the stupid strings on the old mantles. I didn't realize they had clip on mantles now. I might try and find one at a grave sale this spring just to have.

he can carry his own water/food and some maybe 6 mags for dad

 

I put some WD-40 in the back of my truck in the storage but it was making a horrible rattling noise so i came up with this simple solution.
I used one Hanes Tall sock. Just put the can in the sock and your set.




The sock could also be a good rag when out on the trail.
This could also be used for the insect repellant and other things that make a rattle in the back of your truck.
