what finish is better for a bumper?

just wondering what everyone thinks is the best finish for after market steel bumpers

 

both have pros and cons. powdercoating is more durable, but when it is scratched/damaged, you have to strip or sandblast and then re-powder. spray-on bedliner is less durable, but much easier to touch up. just depends on what you feel like doing.

for sliders, i'd definitely go with something easily touched up. if you're going to be off-roading a lot, i'd go with spray-on.

I always recomend the rustoleum bedliner in the spray can. Ive used it on a grill and my light bar and they have held up great for nearly two years now. the light bar has taken a few dings and mesquite trees too.

Not true at all. Powder coat can be touched up just like paint and with paint. use a filler/primer then get color matched paint and walla touched up.

X2. My front will get it sooner then later. I'm dam tired of taking it off every spring to sand and get rid of 40 rusted up rock dings.

The rear I'm keeping painted because I drag it everywhere.

Powder coat is hit or miss and looks pretty for mall crawlers.

 

well its a front relentless bumper. i fully plan on using this bumper for what its made for. but its also going on my daily driver so i don't want it to look like shit. i think im leaning toward spray on liner just cause of the cost and how easy it is to touch up. but im not sold of either. i wish i could see 1 of each in person

 

The powder coating on my ARB has held up amazingly for several years. It's thick too!

 

DIY spray on bedliner is a bitch to keep clean due to the ridges and bumps they also scratch easily IMO. I have an Avid bar that I used that crap on. Never again. Any thing that rubbed it hard scratched it.

Linex and the other pro spray on products are rubber based and once you do scratch or tear it the holes are hard to see and the metal rusts from behind.

With almost 2 years of use regardless of what industrial paint I have used they all chip badly on my Relentless.

Some say powder coating is for mall crawlers, but that's 100% bogus. I have seen a couple badly beat up ARB's that still have no chips after years and years of use. That's why my mall crawler will get the front powder coated in spring.

I have my stuff lineX'd. Although it was absurdly expensive, I do like the finish.

that's because it's painted
and not some crappy spary paint from HD....it's Sherwin Williams industrial HD paint that was rolled on over their same industrial primer.

I get that spray paint is good for the guys in the desert. It just won't hold it's weight out here in the salt belt.

If it was powder coated like an ARB or Demmelio it would be all good (excluded shitty allpoo powdercoating cause it sucks).

 

Two-part Epoxy primer then two part epoxy topcoat. It's as tough as, or tougher than powder coat. An industrial enamel, from a farm supply store, with a hardened mixed in, will be easier to find. The downside is that it takes much longer to fully cure.
Both are easy to touch up. It's getting the ratios right that's tough.

 

FYI I have an ARB and after one year in the salt belt the powdercoat flaked off and was rusting underneath.
