Well, you can easily purchase the salvage motor with less than half of what's on that scale. I wouldn't use that gold though, not in this economy. I would probably lean towards the motor cause I would be willing to bet that camshaft locked up to break like that. You may have a lubrication issue lerking. On the ohc ford vehicles I am used to working on, a lack of lubrication problem, the cams will always lock up first. Good luck!

I can't find my gear puller, can someone recommend one that will do it all on my Tacoma.

    Thanks!

Also can anyone recommend a source for heads/motor parts.

    3.4 is NON INTERFERENCE!

Looks like you need a camshaft and pulley. But the valves, pistons, etc should all be okay.

Looks like the cam seized up due to lack of oil. Sludge in the oil passages.
I just can't trust this engine now, so I bought a salvaged motor. $1209 1 year warranty 60xxx miles
I may do a rebuild on it at my leisure, I like HP and torque made the old fashioned way.

Wow. That sucks. I have to wonder if the previous owner knew something was up with that motor.:( Glad you found a low mileage motor for it.

damn the upper cam doesn't even look like it was getting any oil. Is that rust on the cam and cam lobes an bearing cap? crazy... You seem to be taking it pretty well. I'd prolly be raising a shit storm with the previous owner that may or may not yield any return

It's not rust Mike it's where the oil was cooked off. From my research when this motor gets sludged up the first oil passages to plug up are the B2 cam (drivers side).

I am curious to know what type of oil and filter the owner used. This engine wasnt making any noises when you purchased it?

I don't think its brand specific as to the oil type, IMHO its lack of service that causes sludge and/or over heating.

Motor sounded fine and it drove, a oil passage can become clogged in a heartbeat, then it only takes a few minutes for bearing failure.

Too bad you didn't take it for a longer test drive, or waited a few days. But you can't change what happened, you can just change what will happen. Good luck with the new motor. The truck will last to easily 300-400k with the 3.4. That thing is a bullet proof tank. Take pics during the engine install.

    good luck

Just a quick update, photos of the new salvaged motor.
The old motor is out and it took me about 16 hours

    Wow,

Very sorry to see and hear what happened!! Definitely no fun especially right after you purchased it as well.... I feel you there.

On the upside, great job on the ambition to get it all fixed up with a new replacement motor. It sounds like you are making progress quickly in which case you'll have it back on the road in no time and this can all be a thing of the past.

P.S. while you're at it and is something you've probably already thought of, but there's no better time to install a new timing belt/water pump (the right way of course ;)) in the new motor than now before it's in the truck! Makes things are MUCH more accessible to do when everything's right infront of you on the stand.

Yes I did the complete OEM water pump, timing belt, idlers, and tensioner yesterday.

I got the kit off Amazon for $260.

Also this replacement motor is a 99, the exhaust manifolds are a bit different then the 97 I'm replacing so I swapped them to fit the 97 crossover pipe.

The only tools I had to buy, a set of deep offset extra long box end wrenches (14 mm) to reach the flywheel/torque converter bolts and a set of extra long combination wrenches to reach the bell housing to block top bolts.

So far the wiring harness looks identical except for one plug on the automatic transmission.

Oh and when I pulled the floor shift lever cover off I found $45 folded up :)

Some headers would let it breathe a little better while your at it..but looking at the condition of your heads I would be a little timid running that motor after repair as well...I think your choice to replace the whole thing was warranted. good job.

OP good job on doing the damn thing. Trying to do a motor replacement solo is a biatch, i had to do one in my cherokee. Never again will i tackle it solo.

Well the 99 wiring harness was not compatible with the 97 computer so I did a swap with the old harness (3 hours).
I would now caution anyone who is doing a swap to check the computer plugs carefully.
And a good rule would be to just use the old harness.

I agree 87mike doing it solo is harder, but I know some old school tricks and having the right tools like the overhead chain fall on rollers makes it go a bit better.
