Security Gas Cap

Just curious as to what kind of security others are using to lock their gas cap? I have read about some locking gas caps manufactured by stant that were not very "secure".

 

I believe mine is a Stant. It is alot more secure than having nothing. It is secure enough to keep the punks out. That's all I was after...

 

Funny this thread came up, the gas gnomes got me, I just topped off before I came home from the gym last night and I am down to a half today, on 11 miles ! If i catch who did this...they will rue the day !!

I have one also, only drawback for me is that it has frozen a few times..I used my lighter to heat up the key and after three times it finally unlocked.

 

Yeah, I've seen it all the time in Mad Max movies.

 

Any mods to overcome this problem for many?

 

That's one of the very few gripes I have about the Tacoma, the lack of a locking fuel door. The only option you really have unless you want to do some serious fabrication is a locking fuel cap. Toyota really needs to add a locking/remote fuel door.

That's probably the only thing wrong with these trucks.

 

LOL, I just ordered one online. I keep forgetting to buy one and I need to.

 

He said he uses a lighter to heat up the "KEY", not the gas cap.

 

I have a cheapo $12 locking gas cap that was on my Dodge.... cheesy cheap thing. It worked.....

I guess I could try and see if it fits on the tacoma - but I'd really rather have something else.

Wonder how hard it would be to install a cable actuated locking gas door?

...and like I have time to even think about researching that.

 

i got a locking gas cap from pepboys...not sure what brand it is but it does the job

 

I've been working on the locking door issue myself but keep getting stuck on the same thing. Our gas doors have the little flare to grab when opening, not perfectly flat. Getting a cable and lock set up from a junk yard would be easy. Installation would probably take about 2 hours with a few beer breaks included. The thing is, you'd still have that damn finger handle and the locks on gas doors are just flimsy plastic so it wouldn't really do any good.

Next step for me is to look into other Toyota models that might have a locking gas door (or at least a flat one) and see if they make it in the same color as my truck.

Stant make about 90% of the gas caps sold with new cars and sold as aftermarket, and they are decent. When the 07 Tundras come out, Stant and Toyota did not list a locking gas cap, and eventullly someone posted one on EBAY, and it was made in Germany and was very well made, and fit well. It ended up being the same as the previous model caps and the earlier Stants would fit, but the german cap looked and fit nicer. You might still find one online. I do not care for or would go to the troudle of trying to fit a locking door, as someone will just destroy it and cost you more money for the primed door, and then having it painted. At night in your driveway someone can pry open the door with a large screwdriver, and not make a sound.

 

When I was a teen in South Florida just starting to drive back in the early 70's and even though gas was $.27 per gallon, I rarely had enough money for gas and to take my date out to a movie. I knew of a hard working construction worker who filled up his Ford pickup on the way home every Friday evening. He also always left his very full wallet on the driver's seat of the truck and of course the doors were unlocked. (I never touched that.) I usually showed up like clock work around 9:00 pm with a five gallon gas can. At some point earlier I had worked a hole into the steel gas tank with an ice pick then put a sheet metal screw with a rubber cromment back in. Whenever I wanted gas, I would just remove the screw and let his tank drain into my five-gallon can until it was full. I then replaced the screw and ensured the leak stopped and would return the next Friday night. He was not the only one in my stable.

No locking gas gas caps or doors will stop someone if they want your gas.
